about mathematics examination

Hello everyone,

I am trying to figure out a proper word for a mathematics examination that I took for entering the university as a special admission procedure for students recommended by the dean of highschool. I’d like to explain about that in my statement of purpose to emphasize my strong quantitative skills.

the problem is that since I am not a native english speaker, I dont know the exact term to define this math exam which was in an essay style for 90 minutes.
i had 5 questions to solve proving and applying axioms and logics, whatever. it was even hard to find the correct answer for some questions.

so it makes me wonder if it is alright to simply put it as a mathematic examination.
or is there any other words you think better ? or should i just explain what i described above in my sop as well to help the board understanding easily ?

many thanks in advance for your help and ideas.

cheers,

Not quite sure if I totally understand you, but I think what you are describing is called an “entry exam” or college entry exam.

i know that it is called an entry exam.
what I would like to say here is more focused on this mathematics exam which was only a part of a college entry exam.
actually to translate what we call it in my country, it means literally “mathematics dissertation.” but i’m not sure if it makes sense in English.

“mathematics dissertation” does not make sense as a dissertation typically refers to something that you write to get your PhD - not something you do to gain entry to undergraduate college. Perhaps something like, “on the mathematics section of the college’s entry exam, I did exceptionally well” or “the math portion of then entry exam was extensive and rigorous and contained five questions” (if you want to describe it). I don’t know if we have a name for something like this (but I am in the sciences, not straight math - so perhaps there’s an obscure math term for this type of exam that non-majors don’t know)

thank you for your comment LAC operon.
you are right that “math dissertation” doesn’t make sense in its nature.
to be honest, it sounds weird even in my language. but anyway, this exam is quite exceptional.
I appreciate your help, I think I’d better describe it in details to underline the rigorousness of the exam.

thank you very much ! ;)

Why not just give the name of the exam?

I assume you want to describe it in your statement of purpose when applying to graduate school. Keep in mind that they are less interested in what happened before college than they are about what happened during it.

ok thanks for the tip!
