Hi, I’m applying to JHU via the common app, just completed everything except for the two JHU essays. My common app one is pretty good, I don’t know how necessary the JHU ones are, could someone please let me know?

Quick rundown:
AP Scholar w/Distinction (5 5’s and 1 4), National Merit Semifinalist, etc
SAT: 2400
SAT II’s: 790 Math IIC, 780 Chem, 770 Physics
GPA: 4.0 UW
Good EC’s, not extremely outstanding, but above average.

Always helps to look around first. Regardless of how good your other stats are, I’m sure the adcoms want to see those essays. In fact, essays are considered a “very important” admissions factor while testing is only considered “important” (as per the hopkins website and princetonreview). Hope that helps.

2400!! turns a virulent shade of green
anyways

you have to do two essays for the jhu supplement
10$ essay
academic interest essay

(you didnt expect me to type the entire questions did you?? well if you did, you expected too much )

download the jhu supplement to the common application from jhu’s website. and yeah, as himoz said searching the forums at cc is also a good way to know more

Ah, thanks for the links HiMoz, I will definitely complete those essays. Any indication on how long they should be (eg. 250 or 500 words) each? Thanks!

aravinhurt, of course I didn’t expect you to type out the questions! They are on the application, after all :). But yeah, thanks, I will definitely write those things now. :sigh:

There is no official limit to the length of the essays however the recommended length is:
10$ - Around 500 words (mine was 750)
Academic Interest - 150-300 (mine was 250)

genevievecour: i dont think they PREFER either way, but they do welcome creative ways…and good luck with chicago…im waiting for both decisions! :)

I never write titles for college essays. The online applications don’t even let you write them in, there’s probably a reason for that. If on paper, I just include the prompt at the top (left justified).

As a Hopkins RD acceptee from last year, let me emphasize the importance of the essays. I’m sure they were the reason I was accepted since none of my other stats stood out. Admissions always emphasizes the importance of a well-rounded and out-going applicant and how they really shine through beyond grades and test-scores.
