About the AU Class of 2016 Facebook page

Are you all aware that the page on Facebook that is currently getting a lot of traffic has no connection to AU?

The page suggests that you should look into ■■■■■■■■ to help you find a roommate. In a sidebar it says:

Now, I have no connection to Roomsuf at all. It doesn’t matter to me one way or the other whether you all use ■■■■■■■■. But I do think you all ought to be aware that the creator of that page, Justin Gaither, has no connection whatsoever to American University; what he’s connected to is…■■■■■■■■. So when the Facebook page seems to suggest you use ■■■■■■■■ to find a roommate, that suggestion is coming from ■■■■■■■■, and not from AU.

A lot of people on CC have expressed suspicions about ■■■■■■■■. I wouldn’t go so far as to call it a scam, as others have done. But I do think ■■■■■■■■ wants to gather a lot of your personal information and charge you money in order to do what you could perfectly well do on your own: choose a roommate.

American will make it easy for you to interact with other incoming students and find a compatible roommate. Be patient, though, because they won’t do this until after May 1, when the RD admissions are finished, and incoming students have put down their deposits. For more information about how this will work, see post #5 here (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/american-university/1254749-questions-au-student.html), and also the FAQ at this page of AU’s web site: [First Year | Housing and Dining Programs | American University, Washington, D.C.](http://www.american.edu/ocl/housing/firstyear.cfm).

I’m not saying, don’t use that Facebook page; so far, it seems to be where the people are. (If I were an incoming student, I might try to get people to migrate to a student-created page instead of a ■■■■■■■■-created page. But I’m a parent, not a student. Y’all do what you want.)

I’m not saying don’t use ■■■■■■■■, either.

I’m just saying, caveat emptor. And also, I hope you’ll have a great time at American.
