About the GSHIP

Hi, everyone,

Nice meeting you guys. I am a new International graduate student in UC Davis. Today during the Graduate student health insurance plan (GSHIP) orientation, I was told that per quarter I have to pay $682, which is really a heavy load for me.

Hence, here I’d like to ask that is this amount reasonable in United States? Is there any other cheaper insurance you may recommend?

I would appreciate any response.

Last but not least, I wish all of you every success in the upcoming academic year!

Thank you
Martin

Many Americans obtain health insurance coverage from their employer, and purchasing individual coverage on your own can be very expensive. I’m sure you could find insurance policies which are cheaper than the university plan, but cheaper plans are less comprehensive and may not meet the standards required by the university to waive GSHIP.

I’m an undergraduate student, and I just waived my participation in USHIP because I’m under my parent’s insurance plan until I’m 26. I believe USHIP (for undergraduates) only costs $375 per quarter, so I’m not sure why graduate students pay so much more. Regardless, I believe the GSHIP insurance coverage is probably fairly priced and you would be unlikely to find an equally comprehensive health plan on your own for less money.

Hi, andrew2011,

Thank you very much for your reply. =) I may stick to the GSHIP, then.
