About time to apply (again): any experiences from transfer students?

What are reasons that freshmen do not stay on as sophomores?

My daughter is a freshman and I recall all the effort in the search process that she underwent last year around this time. I have spoken with some friends who have kids in her HS sr class last year and I was surprised that they are doing the application process again since they had experiences that were different than they expected.

Also, a couple of friends my daughter made at her new college have talked about transferring. Only two-three months have elapsed, so I was curious what wd go on to change one’s mind.

There are many reasons: social (too big time sport rah rah school, too hippie, too much alcohol, etc.); size (too big, too small); academic challenge (usually not enough), location (too rural, too far from home, etc.), desired major not offered, in search of a more prestigious school.

The application process is one thing…the reality of going to college is another. Many kids are homesick, miss their HS buddies, not used to living in a small cubicle with another person, the food, the social pressures, academic pressures…it is not an easy adjustment. With transferring is the hope that things will be better at another school. Sometimes it is and sometimes it isn’t. A school can seem one way on a visit and another once you’re living there.
