About to start applications: Is this list delusional, well ranked, lacking in options? [MS resident, 3.7 GPA, 34 ACT, <$60k; business/ finance]

Good recommendations. Thank you!

Well, you’ve given me pause for thought on this one. I asked him and he says national TV level is a requirement.

His exact words were “Ole Miss will be my second favorite team if I go somewhere else, so I want my first to be an actual contender.”

If football is a must (rather than big sports fandom around a different sport, like basketball or hockey) , then these schools I mentioned earlier should be eiminated:

  • Bellarmine
  • DePaul
  • Marquette
  • Providence
  • U. of Alabama – Huntsville
  • U. of Denver
  • Xavier

But I just read your last post and if he’s wanting “an actual contender” then that really streams down the list of possibilities. Does he want someone who consistently goes to bowl games? Or is a perennial contender for the national title? Or
?

TCU is on the new list to consider!

BC: Boston College? If so, it’s the first college he ever mentioned wanting to go to. Why? Who knows? I don’t know where he got the idea or what he even knew about it. We discouraged it early on due to cost and location and he didn’t insist.

I am with you on the NYC living expenses. My daughter lived there for 3 years. Again, I’m not really sure he would be happy living that far away from home and in that big a city.

Ok, now you’ve really taxed my knowledge of football!

My husband says the kid’s response (which made no sense to me) translates to: Pac-10 and SEC schools.

3.95 is below the 25th percentile. A UGA admit is a low reach in my opinion - as noted earlier.

If there was money it’s typically the half OOS waiver.

But even full pay UGA easily makes budget.

What’s the difference between DC and Raleigh? You say a little further than you’d like is why I ask

You’re likely flying either way.

AU will be tough $$ wise I think. But demonstrate interest and hope for merit.

Possibly nothing, although we have to set a boundary somewhere.

My answer was just knee-jerk mostly without scrutinizing actual geography of each in relation to the other.

There’s so much information here I haven’t even had time to process things like distance.

I’m working on my spreadsheet now!

Arizona Eller and ASU Carey are both solid. Not fund management but see attached from ASU. ASU Barrett is highly rated for Honors and the Honors dorm at Arizona is heavenly with a dining hall on the bottom and adjacent gym.

Another with a great college town that will hit cost and a strong Honors program - KU ( U of Kansas) - great merit.

Miami of Ohio is another that could work. The Farmer School is well reputed.

Love it! That’s the kind of ranking I would be looking for :joy:

Okay, I’m really going to blow your mind now. The PAC-12 (PAC-10) imploded earlier in the year and it’s now down to the PAC-2.

But I think I have a better idea of what your husband meant: schools in a Power Five conference.

And a snip with the schools:

Mind you, my source is Wikipedia here, so verify with more reputable sources. From my very brief internet sleuthing, Oregon State and Washington State are still part of the PAC.

How did he respond to that? It seems like you might be pushing him in a direction which is your prerogative as a parent. If however he does want to go I banking or several other areas you might be steering him in a direction where that decision is made for him.

In terms of the relative cost of attending a feeder like ND, I would weigh it versus the fact that a solid analyst 2-3 years out of school can be making $200k+ and acquire a skill set that can translate into very large numbers relatively quickly. The opportunity to receive this sort of compensation for some justifies the incremental cost of schools like ND. There is however a significant washout rate that should be considered.

These are of course very personal decisions and outcomes aren’t unfortunately guaranteed. I certainly won’t try and impose my own value judgements but happy to try and answer any IB questions you might have.

FYI many of these career paths aren’t “soul sucking” but instead appealing and challenging for people with a certain type of intellectual curiosity and competitiveness.

UGH - I was just pointed out I was in error.

I asked if NC State isn’t too far, why isn’t AU -

I thought someone mentioned American before.

Everyone is talking about Auburn - obviously closer to home and obviously within budget.

I was talking about Demonstrated Interest and distance - and perhaps it’s another to put on the list although making budget is dicey - but the other AU (in addition to Auburn) - American, which is in a suburban part of DC  Crap - no football though.

Sorry for the oof - and thanks to the person who corrected me - not sure if she wants a callout - but what the heck - @DramaMama2021 - thanks for paying more attention than me!!

I sent you a follow up saying never mind. I believe American was suggested in post 28. I’d missed it. So you were probably right on topic.

Well Auburn has football!!! And it’s a clean town and campus!! The other flagship in the state is gorgeous
but the town
ehhh
but it has better football
then again, God just retired!!

The Pac 10 doesn’t exist anymore. Maybe Big 10?

Ha. The student’s interest in big football is why American did not occur to me. Sorry to cause confusion.

See, you really exposed me. I read it to my husband and he said “No, I told you Big 10, not Pac 10!” :joy:

But yes, I do think you’re on the right path with Power 5

Aside: I’m really liking what I’m seeing as I’m looking at Wake Forest. I know it’s another reach, but very nice. Checks a lot of boxes.
