About University of Michigan- Ann Harbor

How is its reputation? I know there was a loong thread about it but in general, how does it compare to USC and NYU?

I noticed the acceptance rate is around 50% yet it’s ranked #2 as top public university and is ranked above USC (just by one but that difference isn’t really worth noting). I’m not saying that rankings are just based on acceptance rates but I’m curious on why exactly it accepts 50%.

You serious? It’s Ann Arbor. :)

Haha I’ve heard so many good things about it. I’ve never been to Michigan or anything. I’m a California resident I have no idea how Ann Harbor is or anything. Care to help me I’m quite clueless.

Acceptance rate is high because of simple supply and demand. Public schools have a much larger student body as they serve to provide education for the residents. Private schools have smaller student bodies and as such have a lower acceptance rate. It is in now way related to the quality of the academics at the university.

It compares favorably.

Huge, public, and expensive OOS. That said, it’s world-class at just about everything and Ann Arbor is perhaps the greatest college town in America. NYU has no campus and relatively little campus life. USC compares for campus life, but is in a depressed urban neighborhood.

@gada, who needs campus life when you have NYU at your fingertips???, clubs, bars, timesquare, lol even chinatown and little italy!
@op
UM is a great school, however I wouldn’t say it’s caompus is one of the best, it’s alright, however compared to NYU or like Upenn, it’s way down there btw i live on the Um campus, so don’t just write me off as uncredible =].

Ohh I see. On princeton review, they have little “profiles” and sections where it says “student says…” etc… And it mentions a great alumni network. Does that go just for people staying in Michigan or is it also nation-wide? Bcuz I’ve heard of the Trojan alumni connections but people have told me that the connections are mostly in California.

I would think every large public school has a great alumni network. Umich probably has a great one too. Btw, I wouldn’t use princetonreview for anything, its counselor thingy is horribly inaccurate and most of its data is outdated/old.

Haha thanks for the tip about it. I just recently started looking at the princeton review counselor thing.

if you need a data collection of colleges and stats, collegeboard has one, however it’s last years meaning 2007- 2008… I think they updat every July… And as far as alumni connections go, Um alumni are everywhere like as in international, whatever major you want to be in, Um’s recruitment office can prbably hook you up with a alumni either in that major or in something related to your major… lol one of my friends is a political philosophy major, lol through Um alumni he got a job with the democratic Party…lol. =]

I see UMichigan is looking at lot more attractive to me. Haha I think after doing all the research and hearing about some people’s opinions, I’m definitely going to apply there.

haha however don’t just take my word for it, make sure you have corresponding information including your own research…some people on this site well are …welll…less then reliable… =] also wut major??? and wut state are you in??

lol i just realized that i just repeated what you just said… srry!!!

Was referring to the spelling lol

Hahahaahahaha wow. Clearly shows the cluelessness there. =] Sorry.

well i think UMich is good. that’ll be one of my considerations.

Compared to NYU and USC?

Not sure if I understand… are you saying that Penn and NYU have better campuses? Are you serious?

You don’t know what you’ll miss. Besides, how much of the NYC nightlife would you enjoy as a student … especially one under 21.

I walked by the NYU “campus” the other day. They have this tiny park on Washington Square. The sun was out and the park was packed wall-to-wall with people… it’s pathetic.

welll i guess opinions differ… I apologize =]

If you’re a minority, you missed the free ride into Michigan…
