ABRSM - Music Qualifications in North America as an Internat

Hi! Prospective Internat. here, mainly looking at T20 colleges. I just wanted to ask, as a lot of people on here don’t seem familiar with them, are the ABRSM music grades and diplomas well known/ respected in the US? If I were to apply to top universities with my main EC as music and I was doing an FRSM diploma (Fellowship of the Royal Schools of Music) in my instrument of choice would colleges know what that means, or should I switch to a more well known exam board/ other methods of proof of my skill?

I would assume that the schools you are interested in are familiar with these but you can check with the music department if you need to.

I hope you are submitting or have submitted a music supplement with recording/video, music resume, and letter(s) of recommendation related to music (1-2).

If not, check with the music department to see if your credentials are known and helpful.

There is an excellent music major forum here on CC.

Thank you, I’ll definitely check it out! Just out of curiosity, have you heard of any of these before?
ABRSM is known to pretty much everyone in the UK who does anything to do with music, but I’m not sure how well known it is outside here.

For US applicants, while colleges like to see prestigious precollege programs, such as those at Juilliard or other leading conservatories, they will expect a performance music supplement recording. They will have the appropriate faculty member evaluate the submission and report back to the admissions committee. Winning major competitions can help, too, if the school is interested in having your performing art contribution on campus.

So if you have similar achievements in England, it can help.

If you did not do a supplement for this application cycle, chances are your credential will help. You can ask the music dept., as I wrote before.

I also suggest the music major forum here on CC. The folks are quite knowledgeable.
