<p>When I first began taking college courses, I had very little direction. I had a few interests that I had thought about turning into a career, but nothing really stuck. I attended school anyway, and simultaneously found myself in a dangerous and abusive relationship. I eventually married my abuser and shortly thereafter, our son was born. Throughout this time, my lack of direction was exacerbated by the fact that I was in such a damaging relationship and caring for a baby. Everything in my life suffered: my grades, my external relationships, my self esteem…my drive. </p>
<p>I am fortunate enough to say that the nightmare I endured is behind me and that I am actually a much better person for having lived through such a terrifying ordeal. Being a survivor of domestic violence has enabled me to discover a purpose for my life that I had never considered. Because of my experience as a domestic abuse survivor- and my experience caring for a baby in an abusive environment- I discovered an overwhelming desire to help others who had been in a position like mine. After experiencing what I did, I knew that the most important and fulfilling thing I could do with my life would be to go to law school and become an advocate for abused women and children. I now have a very clear and meaningful goal and I will not stop until it becomes a reality. </p>
<pre><code>Another lesson that my experience with domestic violence has taught me is that having a support network is essential to maintaining focus and reaching ones goals. Whether that goal is to regain control of ones life or to become someone who assists others in regaining control of theirs, an enriching environment that stimulates growth and cultivates a desire to bring about positive change is essential. My reason for transferring is simple: to attend a university whose dedication to social justice and community service is as strong as mine. I do not simply want to obtain a degree so that I can have a comfortable job, I desire to be a part of a university with a mission statement that reflects its level of commitment to social justice.
The first objective that I hope to achieve is to become a part of a school community that encourages students to dedicate their lives to the service of others. I also hope to contribute to the humanitarian spirit of the university by committing my time and efforts to service- based organizations on and off campus. I also hope to achieve excellence in my academic work so that I can fulfill my dream of becoming an women and childrens advocate. I plan on representing my university on campus and in the community as a human rights activist and philanthropist throughout college and into my career.
