Academic Calendar in Latin America

D is a sophomore at Georgetown. She wants to do semester abroad next fall, but her internship next summer doesn’t end until early August.

Apparently, most colleges in Latin America have fall semesters that start in July or early August. Is anyone aware of any programs there that have academic calendars similar to those in the US?

Spain is a perfectly acceptable second choice, but I’d like to know if there are any Latam programs that might work for her.

Don’t know an answer, Kenneth1960, but if there is a study abroad program coordinator at Georgetown, that person should have some answers to your question and/or ideas on how to get an answer to your question without going nuts hunting for information. Another idea is if Georgetown has a link/lots of links in a study abroad section of their website, searching each affiliated program with Georgetown might show a program that starts later. Good luck in the search. Congrats on your daughter getting an internship! That’s awesome; my kid is trying to find one, and having studied abroad this fall made it hard for her to make connections in order to compete for one. :)

Where is your child at school and what is he/she studying?

She is a student at Lawrence University… double major in psych/gender studies. She went to Amsterdam this fall and studied mostly gender studies types of classes. She chose a fall semester abroad because Lawrence still has quarters, and that way a ‘fall semester’ is actually just a ‘fall quarter’ and she doesn’t miss two whole quarters of school by going abroad for a spring semester. I hope that makes sense.

Has she checked this webpage:
[Programs > Search (advanced) > Division of Overseas Studies]( Search”>http://overseasstudies.georgetown.edu/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.AdvancedSearch)

This would be the first page I would search. There are ten Latin American programs that your daughter can go to through Georgetown.

Act fast…the deadline is approaching Feb. 11, 2014 for Fall 2014 study abroad trips.
