Academic credibility

My daughter has been accepted into PP’s dance program and has put them as her #1 choice. As her dad I am concerned about their academic reputation and as to whether this is where we want to invest in her future. Uof M has also accepted her and is her distant #2 choice.

As a dad I honestly do not know a lot about PP, its academics and other programs.

I would like to hear some perspectives from some current parents and students.

Thanks

Is the M Miami, Michigan…? I don’t think anyone attends PPU for their academic reputation. If you look at a schools Freshman academic stats you can get a sense of what their academic standard might be. Their dance program, however, has a tremendous reputation. That is really the basis for the kind of discussion you need to be having with yourself and your daughter. Many of these arts programs are wonderful training environments and can be a great fit for students even if their academic “bar” is set higher or lower than the student would otherwise select. For instance, there are kids at Carnegie Mellon whose talent got them in to a University that otherwise would never be reachable academically. Likewise you will find “A” students whose statistics are far higher than the average statistic but chose a school for its conservatory training. These students will only be taking a minimum number of academic classes and that was not the reason for being there. Have you been to visit? One of the other considerations might be the difference in physical environment. PPU is a city school and has no college campus feel-is that a plus or minus for your daughter? If she is going to college strictly to get great dance training PPU is a great choice.

So well said Pohsmom!

Thanks for your input.

The U of M is Michigan. Her focus is dance, that is her dream and what she aspires to do as a profession. I just want her to be as prepared as possible for all aspects of life.

I agree and you make a great point in regards to a visit. I have never been to PPU and neither has my daughter. Several former members of her company do attend school their and say they love it. They are answering all HER questions and are encouraging her to attend.

I would like to visit the second weekend in may.

Thanks again
