For WCAS students, we have to write a 250-300 word essay on academic integrity.
For those familiar with this, is this an actual graded assignment or our first impression work for NU??

also when it says “concerned” what does that actually mean?

finally, do we have to quote from the guide in our essay?

“Approach this essay as an expression of your new membership in Northwestern’s community of scholars. Although it will not be graded, your freshman seminar instructor will use it as an initial gauge of your writing ability. For that reason, the essay should be well-written, clearly-supported, and well-reasoned. Your instructor will also use it as the basis for a discussion about academic integrity.”

Color me extremely skeptical. Is your freshman seminar instructor really going to read it? Or is it just something to have in the file that they whip out if you get accused of plagiarism, as proof so you can’t claim that the policy on academic integrity was never explained to you? I’d like current students to weigh in if possible, not incoming freshmen.

I would say don’t totally blow it off, but don’t spend too much time on it, either. As long as you’re a decent writer, you should be able to throw something together quickly and be fine. I know my freshman seminar prof did not read mine and we never talked about it or anything throughout the quarter. Other professors may take it more seriously. But really, it’s not a big deal at all.
