Academic Options for Freshmen

There is a thread here regarding the Thematic Option, the widely regarded freshmen honors program. USC offers other special academic options for incoming students in their first year.

Freshman Science Honors Program:

This option is for 60 outstanding students who want a strong grounding in college level sciences and scientific research. FSH includes special events, small science labs, academic support and interaction with award winning faculty. The program offers honors sections in general chemistry and introductory biology, lab research seminars and faculty guided tours of USC’s science facilities.

Freshman Seminars:

Students work closely with distinguished faculty to explore different fields. The seminars are two hours, weekly, on topics such as law, political cartooning, science fiction and other areas of interest.

Learning Communities:

These are intended for undeclared freshmen. Learning communities are small groups of students, under 20, led by faculty and an academic advisor. As a part of a community a student will register for two fall semester courses with other community members. These groups can become an instant peer group. Activities can include dinner with faculty members, hear guest speakers, field trips and attending campus cultural events together.

And for students who achieve excellent grades, USC offers the [USC Academic Achievement Award | Undergraduate Education](http://undergrad.usc.edu/renaissance/achievement_award.html) , which allows students to take up to 20 units per semester without extra charge (worth about $2,600 per semester) to pursure major/minor combinations or double majors.

Basic requirements: 3.75 GPA, sophomore standing, at least 12 USC units completed.
