Do students ever actually survive at a school and finish their MS degrees after being put on academic probation?
Yes, it can happen but it takes a major effort on the part of the student. If the school has a course repeat policy it helps too.
Thanks!
Ask me in a semester or so…
@cosmicfish - Oops, sorry to hear that!
@xraymancs - it was at the very beginning of my graduate studies, I was severely sick but the illness was rare and it took a while to be recognized even by me (one of the symptoms is depression, which probably did not help!). I had a few bad semesters (including some probation) but recovered and got back on track. So long as nothing else goes wrong (frantically knocking on wood!!) I should graduate.
Good for you, CosmicFish.
Kudos @cosmicfish
Yes, cosmic fish, best wishes.
I have one more question for you, xraymancs, and anyone else who might know. What happens if you have federal student loans and are placed on academic probation?
Thanks again.
I don’t think anything happens but I am not a financial aid person.
Nothing happens - probation does not impact your standing during the semester, it just affects whether or not you come back the next semester. If you are on probation at the start of next semester, you will still be eligible for loans. If you are still on probation at the end of the semester, then you will likely be dismissed and unless you find your way back into the program (or a different one!) you will start your grace period and then begin repayment.
Thanks xraymancs and cosmic fish, that is good news.
