academic probation

My son has been placed on academic probation after his first year at his very expensive LAC. His first semester grades were terrible but his second semester were somewhat better. He is going to summer school(and paying for it himself) but I was wondering if others had any experiences. I knew it was going to be rocky for him,he has ADD but has never taken advantage of the accomidations the school offers, He doesn’t even let the profs know has has a plan. Any advice? Otherwise he absolutely loves the school and wants nothing more than to return.

sorry…wrong forum but if anyone has any thoughts

Do not let him get down over this, as many students have their lowest grades as a freshman. You should be his support and encourage him. He needs to get tutoring help. Tutoring is a good thing for all students, as he will get more out of the class. Tutoring is not a negative, it is a positive.
Boost his GPA and confidence with course selection. Did he use a site like ratemyprofessor.com to select some easier grading profs? Maybe he had a bunch of tough profs his first semester? Did he ask fellow students who to take? Did he visit profs during their office hours to ask questions? Profs like students who show an interest and effort in their classes, and don’t like students who show no interest and appear as slackers.
Consider courses that are graded more on papers and other performance (as compared to a timed exam).
Does he have an area of interest and expertise? Typically independent study type courses are graded easy (e.g. psych research experiment).
