1) I am a junior now. And so far, I’ve got 2 bs, expecting to get another at the end of this semester. is it detrimental to have so many Bs when it comes to HYP admission?

2) I don’t plan to major in science or math in college. So does it matter if I take calculus my senior year? I’m taking Precal now, and I’ve received Bs. I don’t like math, or science, but for admission purpose, should I take Cal anyway?

Your typical HYP admitted student will have excelled in all of their HS courses, which would usually include a broad range of history classes, four years of a foreign language, three or so years of lab sciences, and four years of math, most often including calculus.

That isn’t to say that those are required, but that is how an accepted student’s transcript will most likely look.

1) It is never helpful to have Bs when applying to HYP, but it happens. In my opinion, 2 isn’t that bad, and it’s helpful to remember that everything is evaluated in context. If you are rejected - and I hope you aren’t! - just know it won’t be because you had 2 Bs on your transcript.

2) I didn’t plan to major in science or math in college, but I took calculus anyway. Why not pursue a subject to the highest level available to you? Taking the easy route never scored anyone brownie points with an admissions committee.

And personally, now that I changed my mind completely and will be concentrating in a science, I’ve found that having taken the AP science and math courses I did in high school means that the transition from the humanities was a little easier.

1) If doesn’t help at all, but if you can compensate for the Bs with other strong aspects of your application, you should be okay.

2) I’d say you don’t have to take a fourth year of science, as long as you’ve taken Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. If you don’t plan to major in science, there’s no practical reason to take exta, in-depth science classes. But you should definitely take calculus. Calculus will look good on a transcript, and you definitely should have 4 years of math just like you should have 4 years of English.

@Sherpa: am I screwed if I don’t have a lot of history classes? I had World History 1 in 9th grade, AP Euro in 10th, and then I dropped down to regular-level US History in 11th and I’m not taking a history this year. But I plan on being a science major, and I’ve taken 5 science classes (3 AP) and 5 math classes (2 AP) instead. I still have 4 years of both English (AP Lang and Lit included) and foreign language. My school also has a requirement of 4 religion credits, so it would have been harder for me to add a history class since my schedule is pretty full.

If you can’t succeed in a class, don’t take it. Sure, it’s hard to get into Harvard, but it’s harder with Cs in Calculus than with an alternative. Besides, Stats is both easier and more useful if your school offers it.

I am planning on taking Stats. I really hate Cal since it bores me. I think I’ll make another B in precal this semester. That’ll be 3 Bs. Am I doomed for Harvard?
