Academic renewal

Last fall, I went to a 4-year university and did terribly. Ended up leaving in November without withdrawing properly. I started CC in the spring and have been doing great. Should have 25 credits with close to a 3.9 before this fall all at CC. I looked into academic renewal and it seems perfect for my situation.
One of the requirements for AR at my CC is “One year must have elapsed since the most recent coursework to be disregarded was completed.”. You see my issue. My question is could the AR still be applied to the transcripts that are sent during the application process, or am I just screwed? Having to wait for the next application cycle to have a good chance of getting into UCs seems like a nightmare tbh. General advice would also be appreciated.

@gumbymom can clarify…but it sounds like you are hoping to be the exception to the…rule.

But congratulations on your CC grades! That’s wonderful!

What is the 4 Year Universities rule about academic renewal. It does not matter what your CC policy states, the less than desirable grades are from the original 4 year University since those transcripts need to be sent, correct?

When applying to the UC’s as a transfer, normally you are not required to send official transcripts until you are admitted and enrolled. This may give you enough time to get the academic renewal.

You will need to check with the 4 year University if it is possible to meet the timeline.

I didn’t know that. The university has an academic renewal policy but only concerning returning students. I’ll look into it but I thought that CC academic renewal was all that mattered when transferring. If I were to successfully get an academic renewal from my CC for that semester, it would be indicated on my overall CC transcript (which does include past transcripts, no?), and thats what the UCs will see. Correct me if I’m wrong. Everything I’ve read online says I need an academic renewal from my CC and nothing mentions also needing it from the past institution.
The second part is definitely reassuring. I appreciate the reply.

Unless your CC has a different policy, they cannot offer academic renewal for grades received at another university that is not in the California community college system. I would verify with your CC transfer advisor. If you attended another university other than your current CC, you are required to submit all college transcripts not just the CC transcript when applying to the UC’s.

That must be the case then. It would definitely be explicitly stated here, but it only says vague “institutions”. No specification at all.

Read the purpose at the top of the section I believe you’re referring to. It says

Academic Renewal without Course Repetition
A student with substandard academic performance, which is not reflective of their present demonstrated ability may petition to have a maximum of 30 units disregarded in the District’s computation of all grade point averages.

  • Academic renewal without course repetition may be applied to substandard courses/semesters from another accredited institution

But the District’s computation of all grade point averages is irrelevant. You are required to report grades and eventually send official transcripts from all institutions you have attended. UC calculates their own gpa from these records and ignores gpa’s supplied on transcripts.

UC goes on to say that Academic renewal is “Done by petition at the institution where the course was taken” from https://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/_files/documents/ensuring-transfer-success/final_ets-advanced-evaluation_ada.pdf page 19

So while I don’t work for UC admissions I don’t see AR as working for you. But that begs the question of why you are trying AR in the first place. You wrote

This makes it sound like it was your 1st semester and you left without completing the semester and then received F’s because you were no longer showing up. The thing to investigate is whether that college will allow you to amend things with a retroactive withdrawal. A few years ago there was a situation on the forum where someone had some issues and stopped attending their 4-year, went on to success at a CC, then followed forum advice and eventually was granted a retroactive withdrawal. IMO you should call and find out if this is possible for you; the first question to pursue is who would have the authority to do this. It’s probably someone at the dean level. This is something you’ll have to make calls to make happen, it’s an unusual request so you won’t find it on the school’s website.

Wow that is not good. Seems like I’ll just have to tank like a 3.0 GPA and hope for the best.
