ACADEMICALLY DISMISSED GAME PLAN. PLEASE READ!

So this is my freshmen year of college and I have been academically dismissed from my current college. And while most people would agree that there is NO real possible reason as to why a student is failing in comparison to other students who are often faced with even more difficulties and distractions, not every student is the same with the same amount of focus, determination and time management skills.

With that being said, I had an extremely hard time in my first year of college. Fresh out of high school and first time away from home without any form of adult supervision other than my mother calling me at least 3 times per day. I had moved into an off campus housing situation that was verified by the community college that I was attending. Long story short, on paper the housing listing was great and perfect since the property was managed by an “ex-police officer.” We later found out that that was a lie and that this woman was a racist or at least a very prejudice person against African Americans students, making snippy side comments, speaking about me behind my back and making highlight or note of my ethnicity in comparison to my other housemate who was Caucasian. She ended up evicting me from her home WITHOUT reason and WITHOUT court order. With no room on campus and no family in upstate NY, I had no place to live so I was FORCED to withdraw from school. (AUGUST 2013----FALL SEMESTER)

In the Spring of 2014 I had gotten back on my feet and I had decided that I could not afford to move away from home at that moment with the new job that I had gotten. I had also missed most of the deadlines to apply for a new school in the Spring of 2014 so I picked a school with instant admissions and decided to take ALL MY CLASSES ONLINE (16 credits) while managing a full time job. Nearly an impossible idea at my age. NOT a smart idea. Either way, no matter how hard I tried to keep up with my classes and study, I kept falling behind. I was also dealing with harassment from my previous land lord from the fall semester and getting her to stop harassing me and getting all the money I gave her back (legal issues between the school and I).

I ended up FAILING all of my classes with the exception of only 1 class which I got a 2.7 in. The school sent me a letter saying that I had been academically dismissed from school and that also meant I would be ineligible to receive federal aid.

My first step is going to try to appeal the decision detailing what I was facing this first school year and hope they change my status.

I want to apply for another community college (Nassau Community College) and transfer to physical classes. WILL ANOTHER COMMUNITY COLLEGE ACCEPT ME AS ACADEMICALLY DISMISSED?

IF MY STATUS IS NOT CHANGED, WILL MY FEDERAL AID STATUS FOLLOW ME TO THAT SCHOOL?

DOES FEDERAL AID INCLUDE THE LOANS PORTION AS WELL (stanford, direct subsidized, direct unsubsidized) OR ONLY THE GRANTS PART (pell grants, etc.)

Contact NCC and ask.

In your appeal to your first school, provide as much documentation of all circumstances you enencountered. Explain in detail how you will spend 40 hours per week on your coursework and earn As. They might give you one semester to prove you can do it.

Go have a meeting with the NCC admissions office, and find out what status they can admit you in. Once you know that, pay a visit to the financial aid office and find out if you are eligible for any federal or state aid right now. I expect that you aren’t. You need to be prepared to pay for at least one full semester’s worth of credits without any aid. You may find that you have to study part-time for a while until you get everything sorted out.

Wishing you all the best!
