Accelerated Precalculus Qualifying Test

I’m going to be a freshman (junior), this fall at Phillips Academy, Andover. I was told that at orientation, I would take a qualifying exam that would place me in either MATH-320 (Precalculus), or MATH-380 (Accelerated Precalculus). I really want to get into the accelerated class, and the qualifying test is scaring me.

What should I expect on this exam? What topics will be covered, and how difficult will it be?

I haven’t taken Algebra II formally, but took an algebra class that went further into algebra than other Algebra I classes, and also did some work on Kahn Academy this summer on Algebra II topics.

I would appreciate if someone who has taken this test or a similar test could answer some of my questions to ease my concerns.

Thanks in advance!

Bump. Please I would really like some help. If someone could even tell me what the topic are in MATH-280, the course that usually comes before it, I would appreciate it.

Are you a freshman or a junior?

A freshman. Junior is the term that they use for freshmen at Andover.

If you didn’t take Algebra II, PreCalc is probably going to be difficult for you… Advanced even more so.

I recommend looking here: https://www.andover.edu/Academics/Documents/COS2015-2016.pdf

You can find the description of each class, what it covers, prerequisites, etc.

Placement test is not to “test” you so nothing to be scared of. The purpose is to place you in the most appropriate class. You don’t want to take a class which the placement test indicates you are not ready for. You’d be looking for trouble. OTOH, the placement is not “final”. Sometimes after a week or two if both the teacher and you decide that the class is too easy for you, you could switch to a higher level class. Hope this helps.

Thanks to everyone who helped me. I appreciate it.
