Accelerated vs. Regular Track

At my HS, there is a standard science course for juniors. I elected to take the harder of the two courses, “Accelerated Chemistry”. The workload and difficulty of this course is much greater than the regular chemistry class (75% take this), but is not weighted. It is not a AP or Honors course either. It covers far more material and difficult material that the other classes will not cover. I am getting a C+ roughly at the end of the first quarter. If I’m able to pull that up to a B or B+ will colleges accept that this is a much harder course and compensate versus other students?

If I were you, I would take the time to self-study AP Chem on top of this class, and prove yourself through that. Taking this class is the far superior option to going basic, IMO.

Your school profile should make it clear that this is a harder course. Also a teacher rec from that teacher could also include this information.

I’ve faced a similar dilemma with my grades suffering slightly due to taking a higher level course. But remember that any college you apply to will look at your school profile and know that you’ve challenged yourself. You shouldn’t worry about it.
