Acceptance odds to PhD or DMus programs?

Greetings! There does not seem to be a whole lot of information out there about higher education in music past an MM degree, so I am curious if anyone has insights about my question.

I am about to enter the last year of my MM Voice Performance Degree at Bowling Green State University, holding strong at a 4.0 and also hold a Graduate Teaching Assistantship in Voice. Although I love performing (soprano in opera), I also have strong aspirations to continue on in academia by becoming a Professor of Voice, specifically to gain experience with research on various topics in music. As of right now, I have no publications to my name and very little experience with actual research, but would like to learn and accomplish these things.

What would be the acceptance odds for PhD or DMus programs with these qualifications? Would they even look at me or would it be recommended to gain actually research experience first? If so, how would I do that?

Any opinions and views would be appreciated!

You should look at individual programs carefully. A PhD which usually involves more academic research, is different from a DMA, which may be more performance based, but neither one would expect for you to have already published research papers. There are certainly many programs for which you might be an excellent candidate. I would think the best immediate source of information would be the faculty you are working with now at Bowling Green ( and perhaps wherever you did you undergraduate studies as well) Good luck to you!

If you want to go on an be a professor of voice you need to ask whether or not schools hire DMA’s or PHD’s as Professors of Voice without any professional stage experience. I understand that those sort of hires are very few and far between. Good luck!
