Just FYI, in case you’re really obsessed with what to expect (no Axline):

(and yes, I live really close to Caltech, got it in the mail on the 19th)

The acceptance package is a large white envelope that has the Caltech logo (exclamation) in the corner. It contains a folder with a letter of acceptance, invitation to Prefrosh weekend (April 14-17), statement of intent to register, etc. Nothing really mindblowing, although there is a little handwriting in pen on it that reads, Congratulations, Name!

The letter:

March 18, 2005

Dear Name,

It is an honor to inform you of the Admissions Committee’s decision to offer you a place in the California Institute of Technology’s Class of 2009. Congratulations!

The staff, faculty and students on the Admissions Committee see in you, not only an accomplished student, but also a person with the passion and creativity to pursue study in mathematics, science and engineering at the highest level. You have an opportunity to take your place amongst a community of scholars with an exemplary record of achievement. We know you will have many choices, but it is our sincere hope that you wil choose Caltech.

With your admission to Caltech, your thoughts may turn to attending college. Please note, however, that your admission is contingent on the continuation of your strong academic and personal record.

On behalf of the Caltech community, I extend our warmest congratulations. We hope to welcome you to campus as a member of the Class of 2009.

Probably everyone already has their letter, but just in case … the rejection letter is just a single page with a paragraph that boils down to: “we like you, really. It’s not you, it’s us.”
