D24 is in Vanderbilt/Blair with merit - big surprise; actually two scholarships incl one to have “immersive experiences!”
My kid got in to Bienen for jazz bass!
Got in! Violin performance
Got into Blair/Vanderbilt! Violin performance
My son just received scholarship offer from Michigan SMTD and was disappointed (BM euphonium performance). I don’t want to sound ungrateful but we were really hoping for a lot more. He plans to email the professor tomorrow to see if there is any chance that he could get more.
If anyone has any experience successfully asking for additional scholarship money, I would appreciate any guidance.
My daughter had luck asking for more aid for her masters at IU…… I also know an undergrad at IU who appealed and received more. Never hurts to ask.
Here is tonight’s update! We’ve added a few more acceptances and some merit awards. I plan on adding my own merit in over the weekend, in hopes that IU will show up and I can do it all at once. Congratulations to everyone and good luck to those still waiting.

@musicmomtimes3 For your grad student, did just send an email to the studio teacher or to the financial aid office? What sort of reasons did they offer for why they were asking for more merit? I’m just curious because it’s very likely that we will be asking the same for my grad student and I want to make sure we go about it in the most appropriate way.
I just sent my daughter a text to find out. I will let you know when she replies.
I know you weren’t asking me specifically and my son is an undergraduate, but I just wanted to share that we heard from the professor at Michigan and he encouraged my son to appeal the merit offer. He suggested including any offers he has from other schools.
Yes. That sounds like what my daughter did. She is at work so hasn’t answered me. I remember there being an appeals process—like a form. And that it was through the grad admissions department for her.
Thanks!
Congrats! Going to be at Belmont next week and wondering if we should check out Vandy. This is encouraging. Would you mind sharing any more about your D’s instrument and intended major?
Been a lurker for a bit and have soaked in a lot of content, thank you!. Happy to share my son, composition, BM, got accepted to Oberlin and NYU Steinhardt. We are waiting on a few more results. Any parents that can share info on NYU, pls msg me.
@crabbydaddy has a daughter that is committed to NYU I believe?
D24 also admitted to NYU tonight (didn’t apply for Steinhardt)
I don’t really have any special information, and D24 is jazz. But happy to try and answer any questions.
Do you know if Steinhardt gives out merit based scholarships?
They said they do, but the jazz department said they often don’t get very much. We asked why there wasn’t many brass players and they said the department doesn’t get much merit money for undergrads.
I think the orchestra does a little better, but I don’t really know. I bet other schools do much better in general.
NYU grad students often get full scholarships
Thanks for the prompt response! Its a bummer that many undergrads don’t get scholarships.
