Coloraturagirl: First of all, CONGRATS to your girl!! My daughter also accepted as a CFA Scholar for Vocal Performance at Boston U. I would not call her scholarship “staggering” based on the total cost of attendance being $77,000. So, with this my daughter’s offer and the response she received there audition weekend oohs and awes and professor invited her and offered her immediate acceptance this summer to Tanglewood… and Boston her number one school, the scholarship offer was disappointing. My daughter was offered $25,000 and no need based

@songstress2024 thank you so much. I hope you can negotiate some more $ through either other offers your D receives or maybe ask them what other BU scholarships she may be eligible for. It is a steep price tag which is why we were so shocked and grateful.
My D attended Tanglewood last year and her audition panel knew her from that, so they were able to see her progress in the 5 and a half months since that program ended. She had a lead operatic role at her school as well as a six aria senior recital she worked on in the interim, so her voice matured greatly. Maybe they knew she had so many other auditions or maybe they just really invested in her, I don’t know. Her academics were especially strong too, but we did get need based because of another kid we have in college.
My D’s Tanglewood credits will be accepted so that makes the cost of the summer program worth it!! Hopefully they will accept her AP credits, or at least some of them. I think the school’s semester in London program is another big draw, so see what you can do.
What’s also incredible is that BU has their scholarship guarantee and we can rely on this package for all four years as long as we do the FAFSA (no CSS ever again!!) This makes the school one of the best choices for that reason I think. Maybe you can make some gains on D’s offer if you try right away- I have no insight on success rate for that kind of thing but imagine the money gets tighter as the deadline draws near. @4HSKIDS , I totally understand the reluctance to leave things to chance as far as roommates go. But that’s actually what my son did for Berklee, and his “chance” roommate turned out to be pretty much his closest friend (he’s an awesome guy). They were roommates last year, and again this year (until, well, about a week ago, ahem), and next year they plan to find an apartment together. My son even spent New Year’s Eve with his roommate’s family at their beach-house in Peru last year! So you never know…fate has a funny way with things sometimes.

I am certain Prof. B, faculty, are incredibly proud to witness your D’s vocal growth. I am very happy your investment in Tanglewood, and you D’s gift and dedication paid off. Back story: At the audition (reception) more than one faculty member and department head told D they planned to push her through for admission, and encouraged her to choose BU. They praised her vocal coach for her training; and D’s high school offering numerous performance and competitive opportunities…
Voice: touring Italy (singing Vatican, Sistine Chapel, +), Carnegie Hall NYC, NAfME D made All-Nationals Chorus, first chair Regionals & All-States, leading lady HS musicals/Fall dramas (well not this year, Dolly, in Hello, Dolly! cancelled, and like us all, so very sad for our seniors ), piano 13 yrs…
Academics: Secretary of National Honors Society, & Spanish Honors Society, President of the Theatre Department, Pres. Chorale, Tri-M Music Honors Society, & International Thespian Society; 6 AP classes; senior class of 720, top 10%. 33 ACT. 3.9 unweighted GPA.
Community Service: Student of the Year candidate Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (D raised $43,000 in 7 weeks for LLS).
So, D worked hard for this resume and her dream school… her top #1, was BU. However, it’s just financially untouchable, especially when we weigh in what the economic status of our country holds.
@Coluragirl, I do wish we were meeting you and your talented daughter in Boston this Fall.
With that said, I am SO happy that your D was awarded this amazing opportunity at such a prestigious school in such a great city for arts and culture… she is bound to go far and to have an amazing career at BU and beyond!!!

PS: On a VERY positive note, my D did receive a full academic scholarship w/ partial room and board scholarship to Duquesne (which includes study abroad), w/ direct admit to Pre-med program (and can dual major in VP at the music school). Syracuse also gave her a near equal award. So, it will come down to those schools. So, for that I remain content, that we are blessed and happy. All things happen for a reason.

@SongStress2024 that is wonderful news for you and your D! I truly do believe there are greater forces at work sometimes and while it may feel powerless for us, we have to trust the process. While I wish we could have met up in Boston and our similar girls could have had a college experience together, it sounds like you have two incredible offers to consider. You are so gracious in your words and your D is lucky to have such a warm and compassionate parent. She will surely excel in her endeavors also- no doubt about it! I am so grateful for the support and wisdom on CC.
I will offer further details about my D’s application once this process is finished. I will say academically they could be twins- and my D has performance experience in Europe through school also. 10 years piano and several years flute and lots of directing/operatic performance experience. She took more AP classes (9) and received an AP Scholar with Distinction award, but I have no idea how significant that is in the grand scheme. I will write more about her school and experiences once we have signed the dotted line and everything is set. I think all students should be congratulated on their accomplishments and perseverance right now.
I’m uplifted and proud to read of everyone’s acceptances and awards. I feel like a mama lion who has seen not only her own cub go out and conquer, but many others as well. Our kids will contribute so much to the next generation, and this is quite comforting given what we are currently confronted with. So happy to see music kids get their props ???
Hi everyone…I have super exciting news! I got a letter from my dream school yesterday…and I got into IU Jacobs for Vocal Performance!!! I’m so so so excited! I haven’t committed yet because I do want to hear back from everyone, but chances are I’ll see some of you/your children in Bloomington next year!!! I’ll keep y’all updated on this process, thanks for all of your help! xx
