Well I can’t really believe this.

D got her official offer from Tufts today and they offered $2k more per year (all four years, or 5 in the case of the dual degree) than BU. This means that she can earn a BA from Tufts and a BM from NEC - two degrees from two prestigious schools. Given her many AP credits (not sure if Tufts or NEC would accept her Tanglewood credits) she may even be able to do the 5 yr program in four, in which case it’s slightly less money to earn two degrees from NEC/Tufts than one from BU.

BU has the advantage of taking Tanglewood credits (obviously) and a semester in London included in tuition. Also it’s located city center and no commute between two campuses.

This is going to be quite difficult. I appreciate anyone’s thoughts on the two programs. If you have any insight, feel free to PM me. We’re very thankful and excited.

No personal experience on the music side, but in terms of pure academics it’s Tufts all the way. Overall I feel like you can’t go wrong. Congratulations!

Thank you @akapiratequeen - it is quite the “problem” to have. I have encouraged her to watch as many videos as she can from each school to get a sense of the quality of singers and the productions. She wants to major in languages, which I believe can help her work as a diction/vocal coach later on down the line (I’m a planner, so can’t help but consider the future here). Either way, seems like my baby will end up in Boston!

@coloraturagirl : Nice problem to have !

Since you brought up the study abroad option, a semester in London is a nice touch at BU. AFAIK, Tufts has a study abroad program (not sure about the financing). I don’t know about NEC, but it’s likely that they will have an equivalent. The question is, Do Tufts and NEC have it in the same city ? With BU, they will likely have both programs available in London. But, is the study abroad program something that your child will actually take up ? Is it worth making a decision based on study abroad opps ?

BU, with no intention to hurt any feelings, IMHO, is at a lower rung than Tufts for academics - thats solely based on how hard it is to get into Tufts. NEC and Tufts are awesome schools, with NEC having some of the best music faculty. Beyond knowing about Tanglewood, I cannot compare BU and NEC for music. In any case, with music school, it is a matter of whether or not you can work with the teacher. That is a question only your child can answer, and that should drive the choice. Has BU assigned a studio ? NEC ? Can your D see herself fit better at one of these ?

The other thing about BU is the campus, or rather the lack of it. Some like it, others don’t. Would your child feel more comfortable in a Tufts environment ? Or is the BU “campus” preferred ? Re. Tufts being further away, yes, but I believe its a short shuttle ride / train ride into Boston.

[p.s., I think my bias for NEC / Tufts comes through :smile: ]

D has been accepted to studios at both BU and NEC- the plan is to schedule zoom lessons with both so she can gauge if there is a preference. Of course the teacher is paramount in this decision.

A real campus versus a city is something to consider, as is the study abroad program. Both NEC and Tufts have them; I will have to inquire with Tufts about cost as they are the center of the financials for the dual degree program. I have already reached out about Tanglewood credits and AP credits transferring as that will dictate whether she can do a five yr program in 4 yrs.

D will certainly do summer music programs so the study abroad isn’t the determining factor. A semester in London is a huge bonus, but maybe there is a Tufts equivalent (again- have to find out about cost).

I agree with you on academics- I think the decision will come down to the music program and the teacher. It’s exciting but also stressful, and I know many parents are going through similar quandaries right now. I’m so grateful for the support and insight of others.

A semester abroad is a wonderful experience, but keep in mind that they miss a full semester of instruction from their studio teacher. Depending on the teacher overseas, they may not make vocal progress during that time, and this may have consequences in casting decisions for the following semester when back on campus.
