Oooh–@tableforsix! SMTD!!! YAY!!! Your kiddo is going to get a great education! And SMTD is going to get one amazing cello player!
Congratulations to all! What a year for these students to remember always. I took over my daughter’s CC account a while back and have been lurking in this thread for some time. I don’t have enough posts to send a DM but just today she officially decided today to pursue her BM VP (Soprano) at Cleveland Institute of Music. I can’t say enough about how much the connection with her future studio teacher had to do with that decision. CIM was barely on her radar during prescreens. From the moment she auditioned I could tell it was the perfect fit for her. Thanks to all of you for posting and helping this first-timer navigate this process.
@arehorst , strangely I can’t see how to pm you, but my daughter is dual degree also. I thought it would be good to meet some others to strategize balancing coursework and travel. Anyway congratulations, hope to see you this fall.
@Maverick8, you will be able to initiate PM conversations once you have posted 15 replies. Almost there!
My daughter received one last acceptance (she had been waitlisted):
Oberlin Conservatory 4/15 email to check portal
So dying to hear the official final choices! @maverick8, @tableforsix, @IronCitEE, etc! ?
Oh, I’m sorry… thought I’d shared. My daughter is officially committed to Eastman/ University of Rochester as a dual degree student in violin performance. Hope to see you there in the fall.
@arehorst, Congratulations to your daughter! How was she notified? We are still hoping that my son will get off the waitlist AND be offered scholarship money. Less than 2 weeks until decision day!
@mominwestlake She received an email AND she still received a merit scholarship. So being waitlisted definitely doesn’t mean all the scholarships are gone. Fingers crossed for your son!
@maverick8 Congrats to your daughter! Once one of us has enough cred to PM, we should definitely chat. I’m in the same boat…too new to PM
You must have missed @tableforsix 's final decision. Check out her new profile pic for the clue ! ?
Waiting for @IronCitEE too ?Are our kids going to be sharing a classroom/stage come Fall? Inquiring minds want to know !
Aha!!! Congratulations!!!
@mominwestlake My dd recently got off the waitlist at Oberlin and also received a merit scholarship offer. I also had thought being on the waitlist might mean not getting merit. But I guess it just means they offered the $$ to someone else first, and that person turned it down!

Thanks for wondering! My D can’t decide until she has an actual teacher/studio at IU/Jacobs. She hasn’t been able to “meet” with any of their violin faculty yet. Seems like the studios are full. Is anyone else having the same issue (or has anyone encountered a situation like this before)?
@IronCitEE - My info is at least 5 years old, but it sounds like IU/Jacobs perhaps has the same routine as the last time I knew someone studying there. Their teacher assignment (for violin) is not necessarily the same as other conservatories/schools. Here’s what I have heard in past years:
- Some instructor’s have “promised” spots in their studios to students known to them before the audition. This tends to be the very well known teachers - actually the ones I know that often operated that way are no longer at Jacobs, so maybe this scenario is less common now.
2). In normal times, some kids have been able to visit, have trial lessons and get agreements with teachers before making a commitment.
3). However, even in normal times, not all violinists had teacher assignments before arriving on campus. I have heard kids talk about going up and down the studios knocking on doors to find a teacher that would/could take them (literally).
Is it possible to contact an Admissions Official (not a student assistant) and discuss their assignment process and the current situation? I’m sure you’ve tried, but it really sounds like they should be more forthcoming. Certainly, you both deserve to know something - either teacher or process to obtain one - before making a decision!
Hopefully someone reading this knows current IU procedures and can help. Do you know anyone, even friend of a friend, studying violin there? Current students are often very glad to talk about their school. Good luck!!
Just an update… S has decided on Ball State. Between their offer and some scholarships, he is pretty close to a full ride.
After he was denied at JSOM he really struggled with making a decision. That was his #1 choice and had attended 3 years of their summer music clinic. Even I am shocked!
I was looking for the post I read somewhere here on CC with a situation just like this. The post said something to the effect that in a situation like this, the students start off with a graduate assistant? I remember reading it and thinking… Aw heck no!! I’d switch schools if that were to happen to my kid. Then someone came back and made what sounded like a convincing case FOR having a graduate assistant instructor. Of course this is all anecdotal so who knows. And of course I can’t find the post Now that I mentioned it, it will drive me nuts if I can find it so will continue to hunt. I trust the folks in here will be able to assist or maybe you should just start a new post??
@BenniesMom1 --it may have been my thread. I tried putting a link in here, but it kept being held by the moderator. Look up (in Music Major) the thread entitled “Do Teaching Assistants Teach Lessons At Some Schools”
There were definitely a few answers that made it seem as if having a teaching assistant (grad student) teach a music class was a good thing. I still don’t agree–at least not for a vocalist! But everyone is entitled to their opinions!
On IU/Jacobs FAQs page, they say that music majors do not study under graduate assistants for their primary instrument but rather they study under faculty. Non-music majors and secondary instruments may be studied with a graduate assistant though.
