@Musicaspirant, @BenniesMom1, @MomOfSingers, and @momhsc2, thank you for your comments and advice. A couple of days ago, my D talked to an IU/Jacobs admissions official who said she would find out which studios still have room and let my D know. We didn’t hear back from that person yet, but my D was contacted yesterday by a violin teacher in the Music Ed department. This doesn’t seem normal for a Jacobs performance student who isn’t going into Music Ed. Anyway, my D is going to have a call with the teacher to discuss this.

I’m not sure that being contacted by a violin teacher in the Music Ed department is a bad thing. Everywhere my son (performance major) auditioned, there were Music Ed students also auditioning. To be accepted in the Music Ed program, you had to be proficient on one instrument and they had the same audition guidelines, as far as I could tell. Now they might have been adjudicated differently, but I don’t think so. Where my son is going to school, there are 2 (or maybe 3) clarinet studios. They asked initially if he had a preference when he went to visit for a lesson. He didn’t. Both instructors are performers/members of the Pittsburgh Symphony (that’s all that mattered to him at the time) but one of them was an “educator” listed under the Music Education department AND Performance. It could have gone either way since my son didn’t have a preference and it was purely timing that he got a lesson with probably the one he WOULD have selected if he DID have a preference, and ultimately landing in his studio. I hope that makes sense. I could just be sleepy and rambling… HA. My point is, the violin teacher under the music department could be just as good or even better than someone who is not. It’s just where they are. My son’s current instructor is a D.M.A here at the University. Where he’s going, his instructor is NOT, but the other one under Music Education is.

@IronCitEE - my D graduated from IU. She did have a studio assignment before accepting. Here are a few things I do know about IU based on experience.

All students MUST have a professor as a studio teacher (never a grad student…I don’t know why this rumor persists). I know that studios are REQUIRED to meet weekly. Also teachers are REQUIRED to give weekly lessons. If not…there can be trouble for the teacher. I know this bc of my D being a scared Freshman, missing her lesson (due to her teacher having a change of schedule on my D’s day…and then my D being scared to ask for other times…something like that). Her teacher sent her an email (which my D sent to me terrified) that she had to schedule her lessons without fail or they both could be in “breach of music school expectations”. This was after missing two lessons in over a month…and it WAS my kid’s fault. My D never missed a lesson again! IU is administratively TIGHT. So the idea that you show up and end up with some 22 year old grad student as a studio teacher…is well…crazy! Also…to my great surprise…don’t try to skip a class at IU! Attendance is taken. If you are sick, you need a doctor’s note to get an excused absence. In my college days, attendance was never taken…I was shocked by this…and they are strict.

More to your question, I did not know that there was a difference between a music ed teacher at IU and a music performance teacher. My D had many music ed friends and while their curriculum was different in some ways it seemed they were very mixed in with the general music population. Maybe in the teacher’s resume, it says there is an interest in this area? I could be wrong on this point however…so yes please ask. Studio make-up would be a good question.

The studio selection at IU can be slow…it’s a big ship that moves along slowly. I know one grad VP student who showed at IU the first week with no teacher and no concern (very laid back guy who has done well professionally). I do understand that it is different for instrumentalists. Still, as an example, many of my D’s VP UG friends did not have teachers assigned prior. I knew the mother well of the grad student. He had communicated his situation with the head of the voice dept. When he arrived he met with her, sang, discussed his music resume. She then set up immediate meetings with professors (he didn’t have to go looking on his own). He sang for I believe 3 teachers who had space and she thought would be a good fit. He clicked with one…and had a great couple years. It’s a big faculty and I believe that IU makes it work each year…so they may be more laid back about it (for better or worse) but you should have a teacher the first week…and if it’s not working again the dept head is suppose to find you an appropriate match (at least that was my understanding).

@IronCitEE - I think that you have done everything right. And now you have the very important first meeting. At IU, persistency and patience pay off. She should use the opportunity with the first teacher to discuss her needs AND also her concerns. The more real that she can be with the teacher, the more the teacher should attempt to help her get to the right place/teacher. If she’s uncomfortable, she (or you for UG) could go to the Dept Head and ask for assistance or words of wisdom about meeting other teachers.

Finally, studios are fluid at IU. Many people want the “well-known” names…and sometimes they take very few UG students. If she is contacting a well-know name there is a chance they just don’t reply (wrong but it happens). They may prefer you go through a dept head. Note that there were a couple of wonderful VP UG teachers (always had a few grad too) that did not have big name but had warm, fuzzy supportive studios. They were great places to start your education. Students do trade studios as they get older…or not. It really depends.

I hope that it goes well. If not…as that can happen too…then maybe another school is really calling your name.

I know that this is long…but I would guess some of these issues pertain to other schools too…so I won’t feel bad about hogging so much space…lol.

@bridgenail, thanks so much for all of the info (and @BenniesMom1 too!). My D had a call with the IU/Jacobs Music Ed teacher today. The teacher said that she was listed as my D’s choice for studio, which has us completely flummoxed. Anyway, 100% of her students are Music Ed students, but some are Music Ed and Performance. She advised my D to continue to contact the Performance teachers but also left open the possibility of being my D’s teacher. She also implied that studio size is somewhat fluid and that teachers can “make room” for students they want to teach. So the quest continues… I guess I should post updates on the Journey thread until we have final decision. Thanks again!

@IronCitEE thanks for the follow up. It sounds like your D is making progress so carry on. If you do start to feel frustrated you could try the dept head or the other admin person to keep things moving. One comments however:

You may want to ask administration about that listing of a studio teacher. It could be a computer error (maybe someone ticked a box in error) or a misunderstanding by the teacher? I think it could be important to clarify that. It may be nothing…or the root of a problem? Idk…I would just check it.

@bridgenail, you’re right. The studio preference mistake could be the root of the problem. My D is checking to see if she was maybe mistaken for another student or something. Hopefully they can look my D’s application and see what her studio choice actually was, as we don’t have access to her application anymore. I agree that it is important to clarify what happened here.

Thanks, @tableforsix! The prep, the prescreens, the auditions, the waiting–those were all difficult. But wow, emailing all those teachers and other special people who were so helpful, was really, really sad. I know my son had to do that. But it was definitely emotional.

Emailing the other teachers was also very difficult for my D. Everyone was so positive and complimentary in their communications- she felt guilty for disappointing them!

Her university gear finally comes today! She’s been waiting to make her official announcement until she can take a photo- these small things mean so much right now after missing all the end of senior year events.

Hi everyone! I’m a US student and I applied in january to the faculty of science, my minerva says reviewed, decison pending, is this a good or bad thing that I haven’t heard back yet? I’m guessing its a bad thing but Mcgill is my dream school and I worked so hard, I just had one bad calc grade my first quarter

Looking great indeed !!! I wonder if any of your kids ever look at their list and say, Hmmm… I could have skipped all this other stuff. Like @tableforsix S’s first audition became the final choice. Just wondering for future reference. And if you had to do it over again and COVID19 and financial instability notwithstanding, would they have made the same choice? And how many folks’ first choice in the beginning, after all auditions, was their final choice? My son’s wasn’t. 2nd became final, but I guess that’s all part of the process, eh? He’s very happy with the final choice, now, but I keep having this niggling feeling that he’d prefer if he were closer to home.
