Acceptance Thread Undergrad Class of 2024 Graduate Class of 2022

@BenniesMom1 - my D’s best offers were from her first Boston audition at BU (where she felt like a newbie because it was only her second live audition) and her last (at NEC where we both were dragging like day 30 on The Amazing Race) also in Boston. She really was worried at the end because she felt like she was maybe lacking passion in her songs, but funny enough both Boston schools loved her. Go figure! The ones where she was still semi-sick were the toughest because her voice was only 70%. I now hold a fatalistic view that those places simply weren’t meant for her, even though those schools were at the top of our list originally.

We both aren’t second guessing her Final decision- we feel solid! The distance of 3000 miles from home is frightening in times like these, but if she has to skype from home it won’t make much difference where her teachers are.

@BenniesMom1 , I think the only time my S regretted his decision of applying to 3 schools was when he was asked to list all the other schools to which he applied on the form to be turned in at audition. At that point, I hadn’t yet convinced him to apply to the 3rd school, so he had only 1 school listed. He was panicked and wanted to list the other schools that we had visited, but I insisted that he be truthful on the form and in person if asked why. In retrospect, we could’ve just skipped the 3rd school. It all worked out as S really did know what he wanted following campus tours and sample lessons, but it sure caused me a lot of stress and frustration.

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all staying safe! I have some exciting news…yesterday I committed to Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music for Opera! Go Hoosiers! Best of luck to y’all on your college decisions!

I think we mostly did ok. We eliminated a few schools where my daughter was invited to audition because of fit, or program. It was a difficult but good decision in each case, it seems now. We visited and had a lesson in each place where she ended up applying (and some others where she didn’t) so she knew she had a positive connection with each teacher. Our travels were all driving distance so while we spent some money on places to stay, it helped us in some ways to pare down the list to all positive situations. Maybe she could have pared down even more, but I think it was a good learning experience, especially meeting all of these dedicated, talented teachers. She got good feedback and instruction from all of them. Knowing she could only study with one of them was the hardest part.

After a wildly successful audition season, @Doransa’s son has chosen – and chosen well! Enjoy that plush new dorm!

Congrats, @Elegie17 ! IU was such a close second for my daughter. She had a really hard time choosing. I hope you love it! <3

??? @tableforsix with Covid and everything else we think it is a good idea he is somehow close by. They will have a kitchen and laundry in the suite he is staying. We will be able to go to his concerts. Very exciting yet bitter sweet.

Congratulations @Doransa ! I know this has been a hard decision for you and your son and hope you can now celebrate

I’m bored. I’m not a “list” person and while I think some name recognition makes a difference, it’s all about FIT in the final analysis. Anyhoo, my sister, whose daughter is going through the audition process next year, sent me this “list” of 262 Music Schools Ranked. For the most part, the top 25 or so were no surprise, but there were some much lower on the list which WERE, and a few in the top 25 I had never heard about. On my son’s list of schools auditioned for, only one is ranked higher than the one he ended up with… and that happens to be our State Flagship School which he was adamant about not going to. No regrets. Anyhoo, I thought that was interesting. So, to kill some time or get away from some COVID related stuff… https://audioassemble.com/music-schools/

I swear I already sent this… but it’s still showing up on my screen so I’ll click post again. Maybe i finished the post on another thread? hmmm

Congrats!

Hello all
I was so out of the loop. My daughter has been accepted to great schools but unfortunately cannot attend her top school NEC due to the high cost… this is heartbreaking to think that after all the auditions , she will not be able to fulfill her dreams…

@shulad, sorry to hear this. I hope your daughter can fulfill her dreams at one of the great schools she was accepted into, if not NEC. Did you already try to appeal the scholarship decision? And I wonder what is happening with the other schools. Is she still considering alternatives? I have seen that things seem to work out in the end, although we too are still undecided. It’s been a frustrating April for us.

We tried to appeal by they gave us a little bit more, nothing that can send her to this college. She has to consider all of them accept for Manhattan that gave us zero…
We have done nothing… Not even reaching out to teachers. The fact that NEC has not changed the decision day, does not make it any easier… Thank you for writing! Good luck to you on making the big decison

@shulad Your daughter is in very good company as many have to let their dream school go due to cost. My daughter would have loved to go to NEC for grad school next fall, but it was simply unaffordable. She also got a small increase in her offer after appealing. I’m proud of her for making a responsible decision.

All music schools seem in the emergency mode. They already decided to freeze a lot of expenses and some pay cut / pay freeze so probably they aren’t awarding large merit / talent scholarships. I haven’t heard big merit/talent scholarships this particular year yet, from schools which sent out admission decisions in late March-April 1st. All schools are dealing with serious financial issues and they will continue doing so at least next 3-4 years and their focus seems now, if they need to do online classes in fall semester or how to open campuses safely. Either way, it impacts schools’ financial plan. But if accepted musicians / families demonstrate some financial changes due to the pandemic (death, illness and/or job loss), some schools may be able to come with more financial aids.

There are still more days until May 1st. Be patient and persistent with a school(s). It’s very hard to be positive in this depressing time. But there may be some (or many) international students who end up taking a gap year or deferral option. I still think that there are more chances for domestic musicians than international musicians in this world pandemic.

@shulad, your child got into some amazing schools! I know all are not her favorite, but wow, she’s done very well. Many musicians would love to go to any of the schools on her acceptance list. I know that may not be any comfort, but my point is that they all have strong reputations. And schools earn strong reputations for a reason: They are good at what they do, which is nurturing and training young musicians! I would make an effort to get on calls and online classes and zoom meetings with all of the schools that have accepted her. All of them. I forced my kid to do this and after doing it, his first choice school (which was not affordable to us) quickly became his third choice school. Have your daughter get on some of these calls, listen to any live streaming they may offer, and definitely reach out to teachers in all schools. You just never know what piece of information may make her change her mind about another school.

this makes me even more worried about the future of all these musicians. I don’t think we ever dreamt of being in such a situation. Thank you!!

We have no idea who her teacher is in Indiana. I think she emailed the teacher, never heard back.
She had contact with two teacher one at NEC and teacher from Mcgill. They both seem nice, but we did not take lessons with them

Not too late to schedule Zoom lessons with them. HIGHLY recommend and they are happy to do it, I’m sure. All you have to do is ask.
