Acceptances for 2011

D was very excited to be accepted for MT!

I’ve been accepted to MT and am curious about the happenings on the weekend at Shenandoah. Just wondering what most MT’s do on the weekend. I will be coming from far away so will be staying on campus. No car either. My tour guide when I went last week said he left to go home every other weekend and I know quite a few of the MT’s I met were from nearby, but I did not get a chance to ask them that question. I really liked the MT building and the remodeled dorms, plus the classes I took were great! Any info on weekend life at Shenandoah would be appreciated. Thanks.

I can assure you that there is a lot to do here on campus! I was actually quite surprised when I read all of these posts talking about how SU is a “commuter campus” on the weekends. Maybe people who aren’t Conservatory majors go home on weekends a lot, but in the Conservatory there is always so much to do! We put on over 300 productions/concerts/recitals through out the year, so more than likely there is plenty to see even if you aren’t involved in them. Student Activities actively programs for the weekends as well as during the week, and the department of outdoor recreation helps students take advantage of being located in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. For little to no cost students are able to take day or weekend trips doing things like rafting, canoeing, hiking, camping, horseback riding, paint-balling… Not to even mention the fact that there are over 50 clubs and organizations at SU!

Having completed my BME at the Conservatory, and having lived on campus for 3 of the 4 years, I can promise that you will find plenty to do. Winchester is a fun town as well, with the Historical District offering interesting shops and restaurants, and then the more contemporary outing sites such as the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema (only one exit down 81.)

Only being an hour from Washington and less than 2 hours from Baltimore doesn’t hurt either! Day and weekend trips to those cities are common for students, and it allows for networking and gigging opportunities for our Conservatory musicians.

I hope this gives you a little more information and taste of campus life. Let me know if you have any questions.
