Acceptances (with scholarships) coming in earlier than notification dates

My son has applied to about 10 colleges. He’s been notified by 5 of them already – two of them ahead of the notification date that the college has online (they were acceptances w generous scholarship money) the rest were rolling admission. Do many schools notify ahead of their scheduled date? And is not hearing from the remaining 5 yet a bad sign or pretty much just typical?

The other colleges should have notification dates on their admissions websites. Not hearing from them is normal.
For the generous scholarships, perhaps they are particularly interested in your son and wanted to get their offer out there in front of him.

Yes, it is common to hear about scholarships before official admission date. Many Merit scholarships have different levels of selection process, and if notified of a merit scholarship, it can be assumed, college has admitted you.
OTOH, you will hear from most of the colleges on the notification date (e.g. Ivies announce on the same day).
You just have to wait and see.

We heard from some universities early, from one very early (single digit days from when the application was submitted), and from some pretty much when we expected to hear. One school where we thought for sure DD would be accepted took about a month longer than we expected. We were wondering why but when the acceptance came it came with a pretty good merit scholarship that they might have been working on. Some send scholarship offers with the acceptance offer. Some sent scholarship offers later.

What you are describing sounds pretty typical, particularly for a strong student. It sounds like your son is doing well. I wouldn’t worry about it and wouldn’t ready anything into the fact that you have not heard from some schools yet.

Congratulations on the acceptances that you have gotten so far. Hopefully this takes a lot of pressure off the process, even if your son and you still need to figure out where he is going to attend.
