Accepted at UIUC for Math - Worth it or not?

I’ve been accepted to the college of arts and sciences (Math major). I don’t know if it’s worth going since UIUC is only especially well-known for its engineering programmes. However, how strong is the math department and how prestigious is it to obtain a Math degree from UIUC? Another question: What if i lose my interest in math in the middle of freshman year - will i be able to switch to, say, engineering?

That depends on the other colleges you are considering. Illinois has a decent reputation overall - it’s ranked #16 in math, #9 in physics, and #6 in chemistry, so it has strengths outside of engineering as well. If you want to switch into engineering, you can do so as a junior after taking the required classes and having a minimum GPA of around 2.75 to 3.2 (it varies by major).

Hey im_blue,
how do you know it’s ranked 16th for math - What was your source?

US News 2006 graduate rankings

could you kindly post a link?

i got it, nvm - thanks! I have a question though: Does the graduate programme in math equally reflect how good the undergrad math dept. is?
