Accepted before but couldn't afford it--Transfer??

<p>So here’s my story:
I’ve wanted to go to NYU since I was 15. I used to not be so into school, but in my sophomore year of high school I found NYU and, cheesy as it sounds, I fell in love. I started taking school more seriously and the next semester I got straight A’s. I worked myself to death to get into this school.</p>

<p>In high school I wanted to be a music teacher and I started preparing for auditions early. By my senior year, however, I started feeling like theatre was really what I wanted to do (and what I’m better at), but since I had already scheduled the music auditions I figured I’d just stick with it and see where it takes me.</p>

<p>I auditioned for Music Ed at NYU Steinhardt and was accepted, and I was also accepted into the Univesity itself. However, they didn’t give me enough financial aid (surprise, surprise) and despite many begging phone calls I knew I wouldn’t be able to afford a full 4 years there. My only other choice was James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA, and that’s where I went.</p>

<p>So, I’m now a freshman theatre major at JMU. I do like JMU, but I still find I can’t let go of NYU. I also think it would be beneficial for me to go elsewhere–I’d like something different, something urban, something more challenging, something more diverse, and somewhere that puts me out of my element (my best friend also goes to JMU and I feel like that’s kind of keeping me from branching out). </p>

<p>NYU said I could defer for a year and automatically get in, but I would have to do music, and I know that’s not what I want to do now. So I’d have to audition again and apply all over again, this time for theatre.</p>

<p>So, should I try and transfer to Tisch or just stop whining and stick it out here? Does anyone know what my chances are of getting more money/scholarships the second time around with a different major(I didn’t get a scholarship last time, but I’m doing pretty well in college so far)? What are my chances of gettng in again?</p>

<p>Here’s my info:
-18-year-old female from Baltimore, MD
-went to a private, catholic all-girls high school
-ACT=26
-High School GPA=3.95
-SAT II=Literature and US History, both were around 600
-I’ve been in around 15 productions (musicals and straight plays)so far, including community theatre back home, at my high school, and here at JMU(I’ve got another audition coming up)
-I was in multiple choirs for 3 years in high school
-I’ve taken lessons for clarinet (6yrs), guitar(1yr), voice(2yrs), and piano(1yr)
-I was President of the Drama Club and Tri-M Music Honor Society in HS
-I was in NHS and Spanish Honor Society in high school
-I had a part time job at Hallmark in High School
-I did over 80 hours of community service in High School
-I have all A’s so far at JMU
-I LOVE NYU.</p>

<p>If you read all that, thank you SO much.
What do you think? I need HELP.</p>

<p>It sucks that they didn’t meet your need. I’m not surprised though. The stats on CB show that they only meet 65% of need, which is really crappy, since almost all Universities as good NYU meet 100%.
I’d say go for it and tell them your story and write an essay or have a conversation with someone high up to let them know how much you truly love NYU.</p>

<p>I think that if you defer, your place is held without reapplying ONLY if you take a gap year. If you enroll at another college or U, I think you do have to apply all over again no matter what your major. </p>

<p>And financial is is usually even less as a transfer than as a freshman.</p>

<p>CCONN89 let me ask this…if you weren’t able to afford NYU upon their first acceptance, what has changed to make it more affordable now? Or is it that you’re simply willing to go into hock for a very long time??</p>

<p>Pretty much, yeah, I’ve decided the debt might be worth it.</p>

<p>I thought if I went to another school I’d get over NYU and realize I don’t need it, but that hasn’t happened yet. And, if I only go for three years, it’ll save me about 20,000, making it about mid-way between where I go now and what it would have costed to go to NYU for four years. (JMU is exactly half the cost it would have been for me to go to NYU)</p>

<p>Plus I’m now positive I want to go into theatre, and obviously NYU is known for its theatre, and JMU is not. So that right there could be worth the money, where before I was just doing music, which I could do a lot of different places that were cheaper.</p>

<p>cconn, sunnyflorida is right. A deferral has to be granted and accepted by the student, and an agreement is signed which states that you may not matriculate at another college in the interim. So even if you wanted to stick with Music Ed at Steinhardt, you’d have to reapply and reaudition.</p>

<p>For transferring to Tisch for drama, you, as you’ve stated, will have to audition and apply as a transfer student but one thing you should be aware of is that transfer admission to Tisch is even more selective than freshman admission. Transfers are only accepted if there is space through attrition. When my D was at Tisch, I believe there were only a few students who gained transfer admission to her studio. Even if accepted, you will still have to start out in the freshman class in studio. The number of your credits that NYU determines will be accepted for transfer will then determine at what level you’ll be admitted but for studio (which is the bulk of the drama program at three days of classes from 9-6) you will be a freshman. Financial aid for transfers often seems to be less than it is for freshmen so please consider the issue of debt before making your decision.</p>

<p>So most likely I’d have to go for a fifth year even if I did get in? I was worried about that. In that case…I guess I won’t be transferring to Tisch. Wow. I guess my chance is gone. I guess I’ll keep trying not to love NYU so much…maybe graduate school? eh?</p>

<p>Well, since your stats are very excellent , maybe you should talk to an advisory, again that’s the only well you’ll find out.</p>

<p>If you don’t like your school, have you considered any other schools besides James Madison, I’m pretty sure there are a lot of other schools, that will take you.</p>

<p>NYU tisch, is like #1 in the nation or atleast in the top 10, so ya its worth the money. </p>

<p>I person I spoke to doing film development, said he picked nyu over harvard and columbia because it was better in that field.</p>

<p>Again, you’ll have to talk to an advisor, it sucks that NYU doesn’t have the endowment to give people fin aid.</p>

<p>They should also treat people more like an individual , as they have low staff to student ratio (not teacher to student but staff such as advisors, deans,etc).</p>

<p>However, tisch is treated in higher esteem and prestige so talk to them, maybe they’ll give you a full scholarship.</p>
