I got accepted to my top choice (UVA!) and I am now faced with a different kind of predicament. What do I get my teacher who wrote an amazing letter of recommendation? I haven’t seen many posts about this topic and I would like to hear suggestions, past gifts, what worked/didn’t, etc.

P.S. My History teacher has A LOT of history videos which are all of VHS tapes. I was thinking I would spend like 50-60 bucks on a VHS to DVD machine. Tacky? Thoughtful? Go with a gift card?

P.S.S. I’m thinking of writing a very detailed and meaningful letter along with my gift. Also, do I ship my gift to him along with my letter? Am I overthinkin this?

I think that gift certificates to book stores are always nice gifts to teachers–I think more so than restaurants because you never know their eating preferences. I also think that it would be very nice to send a copy of the thank you note to the high school principal or superintendant to let them know that you appreciated your teacher’s efforts–they might say something to him or her or make a note in their files, which would make the techer feel very nice.
