For those of you who will be choosing Villanova (i am not decided but I likely will attend), I looked around the site and found the specs for their laptop program. For those of you who don’t know if you attend you are provided a laptop that you will use for 2 years. After 2 years the laptop is taken back and you are given a new one which you will keep forever.

I’ve been looking around the site and finally found the 2009 laptop specs…
Turns out there are two laptops to pick from…And you get a free 4gb flash drive

Honestly, I was expecting crappy specs, but the windows cpu hasa great processor… 2.4ghz! thats fast but I’ll have to upgrade ram…and add some Demonoid programs if ya know what i mean ;)

Yes, everyone is required to get a laptop. Technically, you could never power it on, but you’d still pay for it (in your tuition) and you’d still recieve it. There are a few kids who just get the laptops and keep them, using Macs they had in high school (our campus is mostly Mac friendly, and we have PC labs for apps that don’t run on Macs).

You can get the laptop in one of two ways. You can get it shipped to you (late June, Mid july, early august) or just pick it up during orientation. Shipping is free (or in your tuition) so you really should just get it.

Big advantage- UNIT (tech support) provides software support (virus removal) and such, and they can get almost any hardware problem replaced in 3 days (there is a Dell tech on campus monday - friday), during which time you can ask for a loaner laptop. Use of the loaner laptop is free, as long as you don’t damage it and you return it within a day of your laptop being fixed (they call your phone- if your laptop was fixed on Wednesday, as long as you had it back by Thursday at closing time, you would not be charged). Otherwise, it’s like $50 a day after that (and they’ll call you nonstop).

You can also bring your own laptop- UNIT provides limited tech support (networking and such).

Also, according to the above webpage, apparently we can get the laptop in early summer (after May 6). Great news. Except that I’m from Vietnam and I don’t know if it’d be wise to have it shipped over from the US lol. It would be fun to have it early though, I just can’t wait to get rid of my old little PC :D

Great an even newer model and a carrying case!

lol its expensive to ship overseas, good thing they’re covering it
but if i was you, I wouldn’t do it.
last time I had an item shipped from China, it took a little over 2 weeks and the box was butchered.

luckily it wasn’t a fragile item.

I say be safe and wait till you come over here!

do they block pages and whatnot? for example, would we need to bring a personal computer to access outside emails and youtube to avoid violating school agreements?

lol if they were blocked, it would be through a filter so no matter what cpu you use, as long as you are using the one provided by villanova it will be blocked.

and this isnt high school, lol. We are allowed on youtube facebook etc.
lol

Everyone gets the dell freshman year. After sophomore year everyone gives their laptops back. Communication majors then get a mac and everyone else gets a new dell.

According to novastudent2012, “You’re only getting a Mac if you are going to be a communications major, and if you are you won’t get it until your Junior year.”

OK, to answer some questions:
[ul]
[]I have no idea about international shipping.
[]There are no filters on the internet, excepting a firewall that tries to block unsolicited connections (e.x. viruses trying to get in the network).
[li]As far as bringing your own Mac, in most classes you can use a Mac just fine. Depending on your major (Engineers have some Windows only software, I think business majors might too). But in plenty of my classes I’ve seen people use Macs.[/li][/ul]
If you already have the Mac, you are welcome to bring it and use it. You could even buy a mac.

However, you will still be required to take and buy the Dell (as a part of your tuition).

Everyone returns their laptops at the end of their sophomore year. At the start of your Junior year, communications majors get a new Mac, everyone else gets a new Dell. (Once you graduate, you get to keep the laptop you got at the start of your junior year.)
