Congrats to those that got in…don’t take it for granted.

Wow. Umich seems to deny or waitlist a ton of overqualified people.

I would say “qualified”

Bh1397: I think that there are several things at play worth considering:

  1. Michigan’s freshman retention rate is VERY high, something like 97% or 98%; this suggests that the school does a good job at finding “fit” for and with the students who are accepted;

  2. Some people treat the “holistic” admissions process as an affirmative action strategy/dodge, but I believe that the university actually does try to look past the numbers and “over qualified” in such a context may not be that meaningful, were one to consider elements such as essays which show a desire to attend;

  3. with the common app, the number and quality of students has gone up, the rejection of “over qualified” kids may really mean that Michigan has already admitted a cohort which is superbly well qualified with similar scores and is looking for various elements of diversity (geographic, intellectual, cultural…) to round out the class; check out the bottom edge of the interquartile range over the last few years…it is up by a very large margin over prior years; as a result, Michigan’s best students are still amongst the best, and the weakest are now much stronger;

  4. Michigan probably knows that any given applicant with any given metrics will have a certain probability, if admitted, of attending; like most school, Michigan wants to admit kids who want to be at Michigan, and high scores alone won’t cut it; Michigan is likely to accept kids who are likely to attend if admitted;

Proverbial bottom lines: 1) mere quantifiable dimensions aren’t the only driver of acceptance; 2) a strong kid getting waitlisted may simply mean an equal strong candidate with some other marker crowded the other/first strong kid out; 3) the 1st and 2nd quartile of each class has strengthened significantly with the common app coming on stream; 4) a kid who has great metrics but doesn’t demonstrate true interest is likely to be put on hold for a kid who wants to attend and who is likely to “fit” and build out the class’s more intangible dimensions.

Honestly UM was such SUCH a reach for me, initially I didn’t even want to apply because I thought I knew I wanted a UC school. (I grew up in California :)>- .) Just getting IN seemed like an accomplishment- though I thought it would be too expensive because I’m technically OOS. This was a PUBLIC FREAKING IVY that I got into tears of wonder/ joy/ amazement!!! (I was on WL from UNC/ UVa, and didn’t get into Berkeley.) But honestly [now] that I got accepted (and received absolutely miraculous financial aid) there’s NO WAY I could turn down this opportunity. I’m so so so excited to be attending UM!
