I have a question, my son applied Early Decision to a school with the intended Major BFA in Musical Theater. I found out today that he’s going to be accepted to the school but not the program. He applied to the school for the program & has no interest in choosing another major. Since he’s been declined from the program he applied for, does that mean the Early Decision contract has been broken?
Which school is it specifically? Colleges have different policies on this.
It’s Five Towns College in Dix Hills NY. Also we never signed an ED agreement, just wrote we are applying ED on the application. Should have added for this major only! But I would think we should be rejected first, then given the acceptance for another major as a counter offer. They also didn’t inform us of the decision in ED time. Anyway no intention of going to this school!
Does the school even have ED?
Well, looking at their website today, they say they do but they also say there is a special contract that you sign with it. We never signed that contract. Also, I may just be over reacting, I’ll have to see what the packet/letter we receive actually says. When I was talking on the phone I was taken very off guard & didn’t even think of this until later. Also strangely, the admissions counselor suggested Liberal Arts & even though we have no intention of doing this I looked it up & it only has an A.A. Degree for that, not even a Bachelors Degree so I don’t see how they could force you into a program you didn’t want for not even the same degree? Even though their website listed it, maybe they were really just doing rolling admissions but no ED, that’s maybe why it wasn’t on their application?
Do you know he wasn’t accepted to theater? Many schools do a general acceptance, and acceptances to specific schools come out later. My nephew was accepted to A&S, and about a week later to the school of engineering.
@Loli Ann According to the school’s website, “In order to be accepted under Five Towns College’s Early Decision Program, students must sign the Early Decision Agreement stating that all other college applications will be withdrawn and the student will attend Five Towns College. Once the Early Decision Agreement has been signed, a student will be guaranteed on-campus housing.”
Because you say that you haven’t signed the Early Decision Agreement, your son cannot officially be locked in as an ED admit. You should call admissions to get this sorted out.
If he didn’t sign the ED agreement then I’d imagine you are fine. I’d suggest that he send an email to admissions declining the acceptance because he dd not get into his desired program.
All this makes me feel much better. I’ll see what we actually get in the mail & I’ll update this then. Thanks everyone!
Got the letter today! They are a bunch of scam artists. 1st I’m happy to report they put the ED contract in the packet & say they’re offer is not valid until you sign the contract-so no problem there. What I find unethical is they sent a letter of congratulations saying we are happy to inform you of your acceptance in the Liberal Arts Program to which you applied! No! We did not apply to that! This rightfully should be a rejection letter with an offer to join the Liberal Arts program. This is underhanded. Glad I was aware of this before hand.
One more great thing, I’m happy to report that my son has been accepted at York College of PA as Theater Major & just today received his acceptance to SUNY Purchase for Theater & Performance!
Congrats on the acceptances! Now your S can turn down the offer from Five Towns College and put that school in his rear view mirror.
Congrats on his acceptances! I think you dodged a bullet with Five Towns. I googled them (as I hadn’t heard of them) and they are a for-profit school (which is generally not a good sign, although not all for-profit schools are bad).
