Just wondering for those of you out there(like me) apply for CS at UW. I received my admittance letter on March 15…it is now March 24…still have not gotten anything telling me if i got accepted into CS yet…does this mean I am probably not admitted into that major?

qq: No, CS usually releases decisions in early April.

speedsolver, How do they determine who gets into CS? based on your grades from your classes? I’m really worried if i go to UW for pre-science and then apply for cs, i wouldn’t be able to get in and i would have to stay in UW for more than 4 years…and that means i need to keep paying the out of state tuition…if i decide to keep applying to CS. Because I am pretty sure I want to major in CS.

Overall, they look for “potential” for the student to thrive in CS. I’m not sure about the process … part of it is grades, the other is that they’re looking for passion. That might be conveyed in the personal statements; I’m not sure. They’re looking for a strong background with physics/calculus (can be taken senior year). Prior knowledge of programming optional.

@speedsolver, what do you think you had that made you stand out (to get direct admission to CSE)?

xainar: I responded to this on another thread, but I can’t find it quickly, so tldring…To be honest I don’t know why I stood out among the other 900+ freshmen. From what I remember of my app, I had strong grades in math/science and wrote about my dream of being part of building medicine / health care related software to directly impact doctors and patients.

I guess they liked my name or something.
