Accepted to the college - but under what major ?

Hi

My son got accepted to the udub but the major is not listed in the letter. His 1st choice is Biomedical Engg. When will we know if he got the BME as his major ?

Thanks
Mwahal

P.s.: OOS (CA) SAT 2220/3.6 GPA , 6 APs, etc etc

He will get a notification (most likely email) from the advisers if he gets direct admit. It would be within the next few weeks.

Otherwise, he would be an undeclared student.

My son also got accepted into UW. But, the letter is not mentioning anything about the Major. However, he had given Bio-medical Engg. as his first choice in the application. Can we assume that he got admitted to Bio Med Engg. or should we get a separate letter that mentions about the Major?

Is it good idea to call the admission office to know the major?

The admissions office does not handle admitting students to majors. Don’t contact them about it; they can’t help you on that.

Since the major your son put down as his first choice is competitive, you shouldn’t assume that he was given that major. The department advisers and other admissions committee for that major will be deciding on freshmen direct admit, which means they’re given the opportunity to go to UW with that major declared. Otherwise, they’ll have to take a few classes and then apply to the department.

Only open majors, like French, are automatic guaranteed for freshman applicants.

You should receive an email (maybe letter, but it depends on the department) about admission into the major if and only if your son is admitted. Otherwise, assume that he’ll have to apply once he is at UW.

You can call the advising office for the respective department to find out if direct admit notifications have gone out.

Speedsolver

Thanks for the detailed response. Does it mean that one got admitted as undeclared into Engg (or undeclared in general science ?) and then need to apply to the BME in 2nd yr onwards ? You say BME is competitive. What happens if you dont get BME when you apply after the 1st yr (or whenever you can) ? What are your choices at that time ?

The reason I am concerned is that he also got into Gatech with BME and it states that on his admission letter. So, its choice between east coast vs west coast.

Thanks
Mwahal

Undeclared in eng. However, it doesn’t mean that major choices are restricted just to eng. I think they put the college there for easier time finding advisers.

Depending on the department, sometimes they have admissions cycles into the department after each quarter, or after every two quarters. Sometimes it is only once a year. If your son doesn’t get into the major the first time around, keep trying again and again. There’s honestly no limit in times applying unless the spots the graduating class for the major are all filled up. Talk to advisers, keep up grades, and apply again.

Besides the choice between East Coast and West Coast, GA Tech guarantees that your son is in the major, right? So if he is not admitted into the major via direct admit at UW, he’ll also have to take into account already being in the major versus having to work into the major. He’ll be competing with others who are trying to get into the major. Some of them will give up all social life to perfect their course grades to get into the major. With mostly curved courses at UW, your son will have to take into account all the possible paths that going to UW may take.

So if its not direct admit into BME at UW, then most probably we will not even consider it since he already has guaranteed admn into BME @ Gatech.

SpeedSolver – you are truly a speed-solver !! Thanks for answering all the emails in a speedy manner !

Congrats to your son for his admittance to BME at Gatech! And good luck on direct admit!

The unofficial transcript finally loaded and Major is “Pre Engineering”. So, is it safe to assume that he didn’t get direct admit ?

I think it just means that the BioE department hasn’t made a decision yet.

I’m PMing the details of the counselor you should talk to if you want concrete information.

Yeah, a lot of decisions are made late March. Also, for direct admit, usually the students have to “accept” the major (confirm) with the adviser before they even send in “major declaration” forms.

Open major students (ie French) have already “declared” their major, which is why their unofficial transcripts already list them as that major.

What’s the main difference between CE and CS?

Graduation requirements are different. CE has some EE courses as well as a bit more math. The physics series is required.

[Degree Requirements | Computer Science & Engineering](http://www.cs.washington.edu/students/ugrad/degree_requirements)

sumzup – thanks for the info.

I send an email and got the following response.

Hmm… most of the courses seem the same.

I guess what I’m asking is: I plan on programming software rather than hardware - which path would be better for me?

Right now my unofficial transcript says Pre-Engineering. Does it matter if it says Pre-Eng or Pre-Science?

xainar: computer science. It doesn’t matter if you’re pre-eng or pre-science. I started out pre-eng and ultimately chose computer science.

Thanks for the helpful info!

speedsolver - do you have any stats on the number of students who can’t get into their choice of major ? Also, what happens when the class is very competitive and you can’t get your major. Do you need to pick another major or transfer out etc ?

mwahal: I don’t know if those stats are out. There are fall reports of the new freshman class with stats, how many people had certain intended majors, and by doing a bit of research with the departments on how many freshmen have direct admit spots or how many graduating spots are available per class in general, you could probably get an idea of how many people didn’t get into their choice of major.

It’s hard to tell if someone got rejected and then ultimately didn’t get into their choice of major, or maybe they applied to multiple majors for kicks with their eyes only set on one major. I know a few people who applied to almost all the engineering majors just to see if they could get in. Although a minority, an accumulation of those people would skew the statistics.

If you can’t get into your major, you’d have to pick another major. Some people do transfer out. Others just keep trying and trying. There was a guy who applied to the CSE department 5 times before being admitted. By then, he had declared another major, but wouldn’t give up on applying to CS. He was in college for more than 4 years, but it paid off in the long run with his current full time job.

speedsolver: wow – ok. So I think in my son’s case I will wait for the UW to come back with their final decision before I fly there. I am planning to goto Gatech in 2nd week of April, was hoping to finish Seattle too in the same week.
