I just called the admission and found out my decision letter will be mailed on 28th, not on 21st. Last year, almost 100% of decision letters mailed on 21st turned out to be acceptance letters and the ones sent out on 28th were either waitlisted or ‘not admitted’ (I read from the last year thread). The reason why my decision letter will be mailed out on 28th could be 1: I’m a CFA transfer 2: my college transcript has been mailed out too late (they received it on 10th of this month). But if those are not the reason, I AM ****ING NERVOUS.

One more, do you think the person whom I asked on the phone already knew my decision?

What did you say to get htem to tell you when they’re mailing? I called and they wouldn’t tell me when they’re mailing my decision.

No the people on the phone are quite unknowledgable (no offense). They know almost nothing other than what they are programmed to say. They even mess up on this sometimes and give contradicting answers. In fact, last year I had to call them 2-3 times right after the other to find out about anything. It really made me mad and the first thing I did when I got accepted and visited the college was to march into the admissions office and try to talk to the people that answered the phones.

Some of their contradicting answers include:
Me: “How low can my grades go before I’m at risk of having my application rescinded?”
1st lady: “Stay at your current level before you were admitted.”
2nd lady: “No F’s”
3rd lady: “No C’s or D’s”
4th lady: “No D’s or Fs”

Transfer students are put in a different pool than regular students. I don’t even process transfer applications so I think they are a bit different. Don’t blame me if you don’t get in but I don’t think your late admissions letter means that you have been rejected.

Also it depends on how late your transcript was sent out. There are still lots of unfinished apps (mostly some who sent in their transcripts and then stopped applying) but a VERY late transcript could delay your admissions letter even though this is HIGHLY unlikely.

I would just chalk it up to you being a transfer student (transfers always have unique situations from regular students).

So don’t worry too much and good luck!

PS: Sorry about my personal rant but i still get mad sometimes at the phone ladies (not all of you, just one mean one).

Thank you so much ‘AcceptedAlready’.
Just one more question, is there any special reason for sending out the letters once-a-week base? is it based on major? name? I am still convinced by the idea that acceptance letters get mailed out first. I think it gives more time for accepted students to send their deposit…
Is there anyway you can ask one of counselors (They seem to know better than the ‘ladies’)?

Quite a few schools send their letters out in batches. It is definitely not related to any name/major or any other instrinsic factors. There were rumors about them sending it out based on geographic locations so that everybody would get their decisions at relatively the same time but this has yet to be proven.

that’s wat i dun get… i mean why in batches… why not ALL TOGETHER? i mean jhu does it all togehter

It’s easier on our admissions office as we aren’t exactly overstaffed. It also allows us to be more flexible on late/incoming applications.

some schools send out like batches by major or something

Does anybody know the answer to this question?

If you can not find your BIO ID that came in the mail, is it possible to call admissions and get it so that you can check online if you were accepted?

“If you can not find your BIO ID that came in the mail”

You can call and they will send it to you. They will not give it to you on the phone.

By the time you get the ID, you should have your admissions letter…

Thanks m&sdad. Looks like the student I know will have to wait for the mail.

Are you waiting for something from CMU as well?

My D is…

Must admit dealing with CMU admissions has been a misable process.

If there was a document that could possibly be lost, it was. Even electronic ones (?)

m&sdad-

Sorry to hear you are having some issues. My s is a junior there (CFA acting) and things went very smooth for us 3 years ago. It is a good thing because we were dealing with my husband’s cancer at the same time.

You should definitely apply via Common App and send in letters/etc through the fax. Maybe this advice would be more of help to next year’s applicants :)

AA,

The common app was the only thing that processed correctly.

My D’s school sent in her transcripts three times!

I hand delivered the FinAid docs to the admissions desk and they disappeared.

How do you lose the app fee when it is processed electronically via credit card?

My D has the stats and talent for a merit CFA scholarship. Given the loss of critical documents, I am less than optimistic.

AcceptedAlready, who’s printing out the letters and putting them into envelops? Student workers? I wonder if they could tell whether all the letters they processed today or early were acceptances…

I talked to a counselor and asked if he could tell the date my decision would be send out, and he said he could only see if my decision letter had been printed out, in which case mine had not. He thinks that the ‘phone ladies’ (they frustrate me so much!) just saw that status (whether the letter has been print out) and assumed that it might be sent out next week.
Damn…I don’t know what the hack is going on…

Only thing I know for sure is that my decision letter wasn’t one of them for today’s batch. And the theory that they send acceptance letters first and others later is convincing me more and more as I think about the probable reason behind that method. Accepted students have their deadline for enrollment (5/1), but the others have nothing to lose for getting the letter late.

CMU DRIVING ME NUTS!!!

They might shake things up a bit and send out rejections/waitlists first this year, for all we know. But that would suck for me, as my decision goes out tomorrow.

“AcceptedAlready, who’s printing out the letters and putting them into envelops? Student workers? I wonder if they could tell whether all the letters they processed today or early were acceptances…”

Yes. Well I had access to a huge book of accepted/rejected/waitlisted/deferred numbers and even the major those acceptees/rejectees were applying to. I also read some of your essays (maybe not yours but applicant’s) when I was on my break and needed a laugh
J/k (but not really 'cause some of them were bad).

Trust me, A LOT OF schools send their apps in batches and A LOT OF schools do acceptances first and rejections a bit later. However a bit later does not mean last. The last letter sent out may be an acceptance! You can never say for certain whether you’ll be accepted/rejected based on TIME.
