Accepting a teaching position and then.....

Is it out of bounds if you accept a teaching position as a maternity or other type replacement but later get an offer for a “regular” teaching position in another district to then decline the offer that you had accepted?

declining a temp position for a perm. position? In this economy? It absolutely is fine! Especially if you have not started yet.

It happens all the time. Do it.

Has a contract been signed? Is this for now or for September? If the latter, I don’t imagine that it would be a big problem as there are likely lots of others who were also interviewed. I guess the only things that I’d want to be sure of would be the longterm possibilities in both districts. Where I live, a permanent contract position is just that, permanent. You would be guaranteed a position at some school in the district, unless, of course, you did something horrendous. If a permanent position were available in the first district, would that be preferred? That would be a reason to think of the longterm possibilities, in my opinion.

It is completely acceptable to take the permanent job, though I would first allow the other school the opportunity to counter the offer and make me permanent. JMO
