Accepting offers of two Universities

Hey guys,

So I’m pursuing IB right now, and I have my boards in May. 2 days ago I suffered an ACL tear, and it pains like crazy. Now my question is, I’ve got admission to a top ranked university with my predictive grades. The offer said that I will have to send my final transcripts. With my injury, at this point of time, it does not look easy to attain those predictives…so is it possible for me to accept two offers? Another college as a back up? I know it’s very unethical…but I just want to know, is it possible?

Thank you, and sorry for sounding unethical…

No. It is unethical and it puts your offers at risk should it be discovered your offers could be rescinded on principle. Uni’s really do not want students they discover don’t mind doing unethical things.

Sending final transcripts is normal. Did your offer have conditions? There should be some wiggle room. I would contact that uni and explain the situation if that seems necessary. Are you an international student? Here students are usually told to maintain grades and no D’s but a slight drop in grades wouldn’t get the offer rescinded. Usually the GC here would not send final transcripts to two colleges so that would prevent such double enrolling.

Yeah I know its unethical…thanks for the advice!

They just said that they will cross check with my final transcripts, thats all they said. I’m a US Citizen living abroad right now, so yeah, I guess Ill contact the uni and explain my situation, hopefully that clears it up.

Thanks a lot for the advice @BrownParent

Don’t accept 2 schools. I know a family that did and bragged about it (they felt the rules didn’t apply to them and it was “their right” to decide later, ethics be damned. Terrible attitude. Wish someone had ratted them out, to be perfectly honest.

Call the admission offices and tell them your situation. Accept the offer at the school that understand your situation and will not rescind you.

If it sounds unethical, it is. Do what’s right. Hope your injury heals.

If discovered, it can easily result in both offers being rescinded. You know that the whole “predictive grades” thing isn’t absolute and that some dip is expected, right? Add in the injury and I bet they’re even more forgiving.

You cannot accept two offers. Call the school, explain your situation (you can offer to provide a doctor’s note) and see if some accommodation can be made.

You are allowed to accept two offers, and indeed you have to if you are on the waiting list. Universities won’t rescind your offer unless you’ve applied ED. That said, what is the point if you aren’t waiting for a WL place.

No. Do not accept 2 offers. You can accept one offer and an offer to stay on the WL, but not two admission offers. Pick one.

Yeah what billcsho is saying is spot on. Call them up PRIOR to accepting either offer. Let them know the situation. Without committing to either, they both will be more likely to be more lenient with the grades (as both will want you to accept to increase their yield).

I had a somewhat similar situation. I stated on my CommonApp I was taking French at a local 4 year college for the second semester, and ended up not enrolling in it. I contacted the college I was most interested in attending (though I haven’t submitted my deposit yet) and told them the situation. They were like, “yeah it’s fine. Please enroll!”

@excanuck99 Staying on the wait list is not “an offer.” You can only accept one offer (of admission). You can remain on as many wait lists as you’d like and if you get in, you must immediately withdraw from the first school if you take the newly offered spot. It is 100% the case that a student who accepts two offers of an admission can easily wind up having both offers rescinded.

@excanuck99 You do not accept two offers of admission if you are on a wait list. You would accept an offer of admission from a school you got in and then put your name on the wait list of the second school. That is different. If you do come off the waitlist you must then withdraw from the first school at the same time you deposit on the second school. You should never have accepted offers to attend two schools at the same time.

Do not accept two offers. That sort of thing can have huge repercussions even after you graduate from college. The other advice in this thread is good - call up the admissions office and explain the situation. May help to have somebody vouch for you too (maybe a coach or teacher).

Thanks a lot guys! I’m gonna take all of your advice and not accept two offers. Ill call up the universities and check on who is more lenient…! @onceuponamom Thank you :), I hope I get better before college…I wanted to play college soccer…:frowning: Anyways, thanks a lot for the advice guys.

Doesn’t OP only risk forfeiting the enrollment deposit if he/she changes mind about one school? Are there explicitly written terms & conditions that you can’t put a deposit down on 2 offers?

I really don’t see the difference between that situation and forfeiting the enrollment deposit of a school you’ve accepted after getting off a waitlist of another.

^ Yes, when you accept a wait list admission, you withdraw from the school that you have put deposit on. So technically, you do not put deposit down on 2 offers except for the short period of time during correspondence. However, putting deposits on two school intentionally is a totally different situation. The terms and conditions are usually listed on the enrollment agreement when you pay the deposit.

OP is allowed to deposit at two schools, but must commit by May 1st.

But usually WL students don’t get an offer until AFTER the schools make a tally on May 1.

By paying the deposit, you are committed as it is the step after you accept the admission. However, you can always withdraw from your commitment anytime before or after May 1 if you decided to commit to another school.
