I buy the extra durable Magic Erasers. They seem to last longer, IMO. I also keep one in each bathroom and one in he laundry room instead of using just the same one for everything.
I’ve cut them too @BunsenBurner . Here I was thinking maybe I was just too strong for them…
-Magic Erasers for everything (they really are magical on floor scuffs, bathtub grime, porcelain cooktops, grime around door handles, and walls)
-Concentrated Simple Green for everyday cleaning/disinfecting
-OxyClean for laundry stains. Soaking stained clothing overnight (even colors) in the washing machine works a LOT better than a regular wash cycle or even soaking for a couple of hours. Soaked my husband’s nasty Carharts with years of oil, grass, dirt and food stains overnight and they came out stain free.
-Hoover Max Extract Carpet Cleaner easier to use and works way better than Bissell and store rentals
-0000 Steel Wool for shower doors. Mine were so bad I had nothing to lose. They got rid of all the water spots and soap scum with no scratches.
-ECloths for glass. Also learned about them here and haven’t bought glass cleaner in 2 years. Get extra of the dry/polish cloths:
-Homemade Wood Floor Cleaner (I put this in my shark steamer) : https://www.ehow.com/way_5584241_homemade-floor-cleaning-solution.html
I was perusing this thread and wondered if someone would mention Magic Erasers. And yes,i also it them up because of the crumbling.
I too use Perfectglass. Was told it did not leave streaks. Not sure it is better than ammonia and water.
Some of these other products you guys mention—where do you buy them?
^^^ So that wood cleaner doesn’t damage your Shark Steamer??? I’m curious to try it…
Method products are found at Target and many grocery stores. Bar Keeper too.
Ordered some lemon-scented foamy garbage disposal cleaner for big kiddo. We don’t have a disposal, but they do. The stuff had great reviews on Amazon. I will let you know if kiddo liked it!
I buy all my Method at Lowe’s in the big refillable container.
I use Bona Hardwood floor cleaner and the Bona tile cleaner for my porcelain bathroom floors. No rinsing. Just spread it on with the microfiber cloth that come with initial cleaner system.
I also use Jet Dry dishwasher cleaner - which I didn’t even know existed until my dishwasher didn’t drain one day. Bosch customer service recommended it. I use it about once every six months.
For my garbage disposals I use lemon rinds and orange rinds (we use a lot of both so always have one to throw in the disposal.
I also use ecloths recommended on the CC thread about great products. Love it.
I use Perfect Sink on all my stainless. There are 3 steps so tedious job but everything else I’ve used leaves a greasy feeling on my stainless (and I’ve tried a ton of different products.)
I have always loved my magic eraser, but having a bit of an issue. When we moved a few weeks ago, the movers, and my husband, made plenty of marks on the wall with boxes, hand trucks, and their bodies! You would never know this was a new home by the look of the walls on the stairways
I was able to get most of the marks off, but the walls are a bit darker and shiny in those places. Of course it looks better than the black marks that were there, but it still looks like we will be repainting in the not to distant future. Is it the paint they used, or is this normal? I know I have used a magic eraser at the old house on the walls; don’t remember it looking like this after.
Magic eraser?!!! Off to Google. I love anything that’s magic.
@snowball - it is probably the paint. My eggshell and satin walls have no shiny marks. That is the reason we did not hire the gorillas to move us! Mr. B and I - with the help of our young Olympic qualifier triathlete- moved every stinking piece of furniture. House1 had zero marks, and House2 only got a couple of scratches because of the narrow stairs!
@Choatemom, what commercial steamer do you use? With four cats and a dog, I would like to keep things more sanitary than I imagine they are now but I don’t like using toxic things and react badly to chemical fumes/fragrances.
I’m a vinegar/lemon/soda cleaner. Have found Shackley products work pretty well too.
@abasket: No issues with the floor cleaner in my steamer. I mix a gallon at a time and refill steam cleaner from that jug.
I prefer the Mr Clean Magic Eraser Handy Grip because it doesn’t crumble.
I have the McCulloch MC1375 Canister Steam System. It has variable steam so my wood floors don’t get too wet. I had a Shark steam mop but it was too heavy to use.
I use a very dilute mix of Murphy’s oil soap on wood surfaces.
Yes to ecolths for the mop and ecolths for stainless. I also think some of the stainless cleaners are too oily.
@MaterS - try Therapy ss cleaner. It is coconut oil based and comes with a microfiber cloth. No unpleasant smells and a tiny squirt does the job!
Bona is OK for hardwood floors with polyurethane coating?
^ Yep.
Major cleaning issue just found! In one of the guest bathrooms, the tub has some sort of powder residue on the front half of the tub bottom, including the brushed nickle drain. When I first went to wipe it up, only a little bit came up; when I went to the sink to rinse the rag, the powder began to bubble. It has no odor and I have no idea what it is. I tried filling the tub with hot water and soaking it for a while hoping it would dissolve whatever this was; very little was removed. I am afraid it might have etched the tub and drain, and don’t know what to try next to remove it since I don’t know what it is. My thought was a cleaning powder sprinkled on but never removed, but it is only on part of the tub. It isn’t drywall, but maybe it is grout powder. Actually, as I type this I wonder if it is grout powder; would that bubble when wet?
We have a warranty person, and if needed, I will have him come out. I would like to try to clean it myself as I am sure he will not know what it is either. I don’t want to keep trying one chemical after another, so hoping for a suggestion. The kids come for Thanksgiving, so I would like to resolve this before they arrive as my daughter loves to take baths; something she doesn’t have at home!
@inthegarden: We bought one of these in 2007 and have been very pleased with it:

Folex
It’s my go to for stains on upholstery, carpet, even laundry! During a party. one of my daughter’s friend spilled a large cup of red punch on our brand new light colored rug. After blotting the excess liquid up, I sprayed it with Folex and you can’t tell where the drink was spilled.
It comes in very handy with 4 kids and 2 dogs who are all very messy!
Thank you, @ChoateMom!
