I’ve had really good results with Whip-it (Bed, Bath and Beyond sells lt) for carpet spills. I also like Spot Shot, but my local hardware stopped selling it so I buy it online.
Favorite cleaners:
Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking soda to clean grout with a scrub brush.
Vinegar and baking soda to scrub sink and then fill with hot water and bleach and soak for an hour. Sink will shine.
Oven racks put in a garbage bag with a rag soaked in ammonia and put outside in the sun. Grime will just fall off.
Dryer sheets to remove soap scum from tub or barkeepers friend. Or mix blue Dawn with vinegar and heat in microwave and then spray tub.
Soak faucets in a baggy of vinegar to remove mineral deposits.
Dust with dryer sheets to prevent dust from accumulating on baseboards.
Clean hardwoods with Bona.
To remove permanent ink water down softscrub and rub gently.
Copper sponges to clean stove top.
Something I haven’t seen mentioned is using Bob Ami cleanser for glass shower doors.
It’s worked for me.
Method and Bar Keepers Friend are also popular in my house.
For those of you who use Bona for hardwood floors: Amazon has a concentrate that you mix 1 to 8 with water. Works out much cheaper!
Target has a bunch of house cleaning stuff on sale 15% off, and the prices seem pretty good.
I’m excited because I’ve wanted to try the method granite cleaner, but I don’t like apple smell. Target has it in some other fragrance -maybe tangerine. 2 of our kids now have their own apartments. They will be getting cleaning supplies in their (huge) stockings, in addition to some funner stuff.
I have not tried it, but I read somewhere to clean really grimy, soap-scummy shower doors with no-fume, cold oven cleaner. The article I read said to spray it on, leave it overnight, and rinse.
^I’ve got an even better one for those grimy, soap-scummy shower doors - Cutter Skinsations Insect Repellent with Aloe and Vitamin E ~$4 for a 6 oz. bottle at Walmart - I kid you not. It works. Spray it on, no waiting and minimal scrubbing with the rough side of a sponge and the soap scummy/hard water stuff comes right off. Wow, I sound just like a commercial but it really does work that easily - I first used it on the clear glass shower doors in S’s college apartment (3 guys, 1 shower and I don’t think they cleaned those doors even once the entire school year!)
I found it while browsing youtube cleaning videos - it’s perfect for me as I’m always looking for cleaning shortcuts!
^ Plus you get the added benefit of no mosquitos in the shower…
said as I fight back flashbacks of that terrible campground with the outdoor shower
My major cleaning tip is hire a cleaning person who is anal. I’m really going to miss ours when she retires.
But- I use Windex to clean carpet spills, Bon Ami for our Blanco kitchen sink and pots and pans, and hot water with a little ammonia and white vinegar to clean windows. I also use a squeegee to get streak free windows. Cleaning lady uses squeegee on mirrors as well.
What are ecloths, where do you get them, and how does one care for them?
Just cleaned all of my moldy shower grout with bleach and the type of cotton they use at beauty salons (buy the coiled version that is “reinforced”)
- Dip long strips of cotton in bleach (wear gloves) and squeeze off excess
2.Place long strips along the grout - Leave on overnight
- In morning take off cotton.
Sparkling clean grout. NO scrubbing!
@emilybee - can they go in the dryer? I did see they could be machine washed.
I seem to remember putting in dryer not recommended so I don’t put mine in the dryer. Just hang them up on rack to dry after machine washing.
They dry very fast if hung to dry.
A friend posted on Facebook last night (I know, cleaning recommendation posts on Facebook!!!) that a product named Wet and Forget Shower cleaner. She said, " I highly recommend this product if your shower is totally disgusting and has mold, mildew and soap scum. The first application requires this product with a Mr Clean Magic Erase sponge. Now it’s a weekly spray and rinse!"
Not sure if this product has been mentioned yet.
I keep a squeegee in the shower, and after we are done showering, I quickly squeegee the tile walls and floor and the glass. It leaves the shower almost dry and prevents any icky stuff from accumulating. I only do a major cleanup once in a blue moon. One caveat - our water is super soft.
I have a squeegee, too. I use it in the niche which has small marble tiles and where the porcelain tile meets the bathtub.
I also spray the bath tub with Method Daily Shower Cleaner after every use.

Speaking of washing cleaning cloths and Bona pad, what do you do when you just have one or two items to wash? My new cleaning lady uses our white rags, which I wash separately and bleach. The Bona pad is the only think I have, and I guess I could throw it in with jeans, although I would like to use fabric softener for the jeans. I know, first world problems!
I hand-wash my microfiber mop pad right after using it. That way, I have a pad ready to go the next day.
