I accidentally got sent an email from a company which said that they were thinking about phone screening me for a fall internship/co-op position sometime soon. Obviously the email was supposed to be sent to one of the person’s co-workers but it accidentally got sent to me…what should I do? should I reply? ignore it?

I would reply and explain.

If you think it was meant for the co-worker but the co-worker wasn’t in the To or CC list, i.e. it was only sent to you, then you should reply back that you think you may have received the email below from them accidentally rather than the intended recipient.

If you don’t respond at all they might think the co-worker already received it which could be a problem for you if it ends up not being acted upon.

If you respond to the actual content of the email it’s like you opened someone else’s mail and read it purposely.

I have always just returned the email to the sender and explained that the email was sent to my address and I was not the intended recipient. Sometimes I get a thank you reply, other times nothing, but at least the ball is in their court now.
