accidentally put wrong major

for my college app, i just realized that i put CHEMISTRY when i meant to put environmental sciences…

what should i do ?

bump

I would call the college and let them know about this mistake. If you just submitted your application, you may be able to switch without an issue, but if your application is already under review, you might not. Call the admissions office on Monday and see what they have to say.

I really don’t think ti will matter – students don’t formally declare a major until the end of sophomore year. You would only need to contact colleges if the two majors fall under different branches/schools within the university (ex. if one major is in the engineering school and the other major is in the liberal arts school).

im just curious but how much does it COST (if any) to change majors ?

Well at some schools different programs may have different tuition prices. For example many schools charge more for their engineering/CS programs. Also, to answer the original question some schools have a place in a portal which you can request a major change because of a mistake. Although as long as the two are in the same school within the university it probably isn’t a big deal. Best of luck!

At most schools there is no cost for changing majors and more than half of the student body is either undeclared or switches at least once. Some schools may charge more for engineering/CS but this is not the norm.

Most colleges have instructions on how to switch your application major on the status page. My D switched a major from biology to undecided before her admission decisions. It was pretty easy to do.

Also, I have not heard of a college that charges anything to switch majors. Nor have I heard of one major costing more than another. I’m sure it happens but I have not come across it at any of the colleges my son and daughter applied to.

Agree, it might not matter, but it depends on where you are applying - for many west coast schools it will impact your ability to get in as you are admitted by major (and chemistry can be more difficult that ES depending on school) and switching can be nightmare. Gotta love California schools. Regardless of where, it is worth a call to the school to understand impact and if anything could/should be done.

Before you call anyone you need more information. As ^ said, are you being admitted by major or just to a school? Are both majors within the same school? If it is by major and you cannot stand the idea of Chemistry then I would call asap. Have an explanation ready.

I would also call if there is nothing in your coursework that qualifies you as a Chemistry major. For example no Calculus, no prior chemistry, no intense lab based science classes beyond the minimum. Same if your essay talks about environmental science as your dream.

Assuming you are qualified for either major and it is just a general admission and both majors are in the same school and you are not committed to take those classes then I would research whether you are decreasing or increasing your chances of admission by telling them you made a mistake. Does school X need more Chemistry majors? More environmental majors?

Sometimes you are better off just picking the undecided major and then deciding on a major once in college. Even the UC schools let you do this.
