accomdation

hi
can anyone please tell me if the royal victoria college accomdation is good?
Also is it fun or boring?

It depends whether you’re comfortable with single-sex campus residence.

I have friends there and it’s known as “lez rez.”

then what is McConell known as?

I’m not sure if we (McConnell) have a formal nickname, but it’s known for it’s single-sex wings. I’m not sure if it’s like this every year, but I think McConnell is the more studious of 3 upper rez’s. Molson hasn’t earned it’s GPA lowering reputation from thin air, and Gardner’s just…gardner. There are party floors on McConnell, like this year’s 2nd and 4th floors, but I’d say as a whole, Molson is more party driven…I’m not really sure why, though.

so how is McConnell? What are the people like(i would think they might be a bit more conservative than people in other dorms).

Also, what is the most international dorm do you think (not US students, but people from all over)?

I’m an RVC alum (I lived there for the 2004-2005 school year!)

It has its pluses and minuses like all the dorms.

Pluses:
Good community
VERY close to campus and you don’t have to deal with the hill. We haven’t had tons of ice since my first year really (gotta love global warming!) but it’s great if you have a class on campus and you can just pop to the caf for lunch.
The west wing is pretty great.
Weekend meals!

Cons:
Tower rooms not super nice (I lived in the tower and it was okay. If I’d known then what I know now I for sure would have requested a West Wing room).
That beautiful room that they show on the website? Yeah, they never let you in!
The food is not as nice as New Rez. Beware of “Chef’s surprise!” The food, however, is pretty much the same between RVC and the Upper Rezs.

Can be a plus or a con:
Not as much a “party” res as some of the other halls.

I enjoyed my time there , and didn’t find the “all girl rez” thing to be that big a deal, honestly. And “Girl nights” with your floor can be awesome. I know it had the “lez res” reputation but at least for my floor and friends, it wasn’t like that. And I had plenty of guy friends while I was in RVC, it’s not such a huge deal.

To answer your questions, it’s tough to generalize about a dorm because it changes every year. My year McConnell was probably the most laid back of the Upper Residences, but still it was more rowdy than RVC. The separate wing thing is pretty nice, you get the dual sex thing but don’t have to share a bathroom with the opposite sex, if that’s a big deal. If you’re on the right side you have a pretty neat view.

All the dorms are going to be pretty international because most montrealers will either live at home or elsewhere (living on campus is really, really expensive compared to living in an apt in montreal, but I’d still recommend it in your first year because it’s a great way to get connected to the community). I don’t know if there’s one dorm that’s “more” international than the others?

Those are my thoughts :)

thankyou for your advice. im going to RVC! with an open mind, and hope that it is fun and not boring!

Just be sure to request West Wing  Though tower is not too bad. Wherever you end up will be fun, I’m pretty sure. There’s a diverse crowd in all residences.

I have a got a room in the west wing in the basement, which by the sounds of things is good.

One of my best friends lived in RVC basement and she really liked it because it’s a small floor and at least her year they were really close.

I hope all works out for you :-)
