A lady asked me this question today–her son is eligible for accomodations on the SAT, but he wants to go ROTC. Can he get accomodations and still be eligible? Will the accomodations continue to follow his later? Thanks!

don’t you get accomodations by having a learning disability and taking ritalin and getting disqualified?

most real colleges prefer you take the test legitimately.

Well, I know that the academies demand a standard SAT, but the SAT folks can no longer flag a nonstandard sitting. This particular student has managed to overcome his ADD w/o drugs, so was hoping that he could apply ROTC with an SAT with extended time. It’s not necessary to be on Ritalin, etc. to get the accomodations from the College Board–it requires a psychologist’s signature saying that it is a bona fide disability. I emailed my dd’s ROTC officer–we’ll see what he says!

I believe you will find that any accomodations will void the test results as far as ROTC scholarships are concerned.

GEB you are 100% correct. No service academy or ROTC program permits accomodations for SAT exams.
Being granted an accomodation will exempt him (there are questions of this nature that the applicant answers in relation to this question and you attest to honest answers)

The answer from ROTC:

"I contacted ROTC, and they told me that they do not consider the writing
portion of the SAT test, so as long as no accommodations are involved with the
math/verbal sections, there should be no problem.

The only concern was that in reporting scores, they did not know whether
collegeboard would give any indication on whether accommodations were used in
specific sections - and I would doubt that there is such a distinction in score
reporting.

The suggestion was made to take the SAT once without the accommodations,
specifically to get a score report that could be submitted to ROTC, and then
take the SATs again with the accommodations in order to demonstrate full skill
level for college applications. (Application to ROTC is made separately from
application to college.)"

I guess there is our answer!

No service academy considers the writing portion of the SAT or ACT exam during the selection process.
True ! college board can not flag an SAT with accomodations but…there is a question the applicant has to answer somewhere regarding if the test was taken with accomodations.
Remember that once a test has been taken, all scores from all tests are reported to the college (you can’t specify that a specific test date be sent to the college, they will receive all tests results).
When taking the SAT or ACT the taker codes for ROTC, Academy, etc. Many applicants forget to send their scores to ROTC.
