<p>You will face broader, deeper problems in the coursework at MIT, problems that may require hours of analysis to solve. The work is more challenging and complex than what you’d encounter in high school. </p>
<p>Without knowing anything about your friend’s course load or course content, it’s not possible to evaluate the statement of one individual. Is this a sophomore taking 4 classes, or is this a physics major enrolled in 5 or 6 classes including Junior Lab?</p>
<p>I know of 4 students who went to MIT from a top public high school that regularly places among the top math teams nationally and among the top teams in national science competitions. They have all reported that the coursework at MIT is far more challenging than the coursework at their high school.</p>

<p>I get the feeling that this is the main part of the transition from high school to college. High school curricula usually consist of narrowly limited concepts, loads of busywork, and kudos for being mediocre that are so overdone that it’s merely a formality now.</p>
<p>Something tells me that it will be depth, not breadth, that makes the course load more difficult than one expects.</p>
