For my First Year Seminar class in college we have to write some ******** paper that talks about how much someone who graduated from college in the US 30 years ago would have made in his/her first year on a job compared to what that person would make today.

So what did an accountant in the US make 30 years ago?

Also, he wants us to answer the same 2 questions (salary now vs salary 30 years ago) for someone from Indonesia. I cannot find absolutely anything on this, so if you have any idea or guess, feel free to throw it out there…

Accountant’s salary (regular undergraduate) in 1978 would have been about $13,500 to $14,000 (in the Los Angeles area). (Been there, done that). I have no idea about Indonesia, but in Mexico at that time it was about $2,750 per year. (I worked for an international firm with an office in Mexicali–where I visited often).

Both of these salaries would be for someone just graduating from college at that time–also note that the LA area paid salaries just slightly higher than the national average at the time.

Those 1978 salaries sound very nice when I recall that I was not yet complete with my accounting coursework when I graduated from college (did that later to sit for CPA) and my starting salary at my local bank was $5700/year.
