National Merit Scholarships can only be used at accredited universities in the US. How would I find out if a university is accredited? I remember someone at Purdue telling me that she didn’t apply to MIT because it wasn’t accredited, but is that really true?

When I searched for “mit accredited” in google, I found “MIT is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc., through its Commission on Institutions of Higher Education.” at [MIT Facts 2010: Accreditation](http://web.mit.edu/facts/accreditation.html) . However, using this site [Search Institutional Accreditation System](DAPIP) , I could not find MIT.

Is that site valid? It is a .gov site, so I would assume it’s valid, but MIT’s own site says they are accredited. So what counts for National Merit?
